Hello! I have reservations on hold for apartments right by Colosseum and by Vatican City. Which area is better as a home base? The reviews say excellent location for both. We just plan to hit the major sights this time : Colosseum/ Forum, Vatican, Borghese Gallery. The apartment by Colosseum is more expensive but I’m ok to pay more if it’s worthwhile. Thank you!
Personally, I’d rather be near the Colosseum. You’d be much closer to all the sites you mentioned, except the Vatican.
Stay nearer to the Colosseum. Near the Colosseum is a metro. Additionally, the church of San Pietro in Vincoli is around the corner from the Colosseum. Go down the steps and you will find a long, quaint street with many interesting shops, restaurants and places to enjoy.
We love staying in the Colosseum area. The only draw, in my opinion, to stay by the Vatican is the Vatican.
You would be closer in the colosseum area to most of the sites you wish to see. A third option would be to stay in the Pantheon area. We stayed there once and walked everywhere! Vatican to Colosseum to Borghese.
Make sure you have good walking shoes that are broken in!
Have a Great Trip!
I ditto the colosseum area. Look at a map - lots of sites close by like San Clemente, Saint John Lateran complex, mentioned above - St. Peter in chains, Capitoline Hill, St. Paul outside-the-walls, St. Cosmo and Damian. There's a lot in that area. More aesthetically pleasing area to stroll.
Thank you all very much for you advise! I was also leaning towards the Colosseum area and you made that decision easier!
