Does anyone have an inexpensive, but adequate spot to stay in the Dorsoduro area of Venice? We are partial to B and B type accommodations rather than big hotels.
Thanks so much for your help.
Next question would be WHEN? Do you need AC on a sweltering July day or can you survive without it while the windows are closed tight to keep the mosquitos OUT and the the sweltering heat IN. Winter is a different story... Why Dorsoduro? There are very nice and inexpensive B&Bs all over the island...especially this one: http://www.bbvenezia.com/ Not in a typical tourist spot but rather smack dab in the middle of real Venetians Families out walking with Grandma or Grandpa, talking with neighbors, kids playing soccer on the green grass in a park with real trees - now THERE'S something you don't see too often on Venice Island.
Try Trip Advisor...they usually have good recommendations as well as online specials. I used them last year for places to stay in Paris, Bruges, and Rome and liked the results very much. Good onlines deals as well. The last time I stayed in Venice, it was at the Hotel Belle Arte in Dorsoduro...very convenient but off the main arteries (and hordes). It's across the street from a school and we enjoyed our breakfasts watching the parents walk their kidlets to the school and drop them off. I don't know if this hotel will meet your budget or not, so can't speak to that. The rooms, as most in Europe, are small, but who stays in their rooms in Venice except to shower and sleep? Good luck!
"inexpensive, but adequate"...leaves a few questions unanswered.
I've booked a room for May at this hotel. The least expensive rooms share a bath, but the price was right. They offer a 10% discount for cash payment. When you reserve they charge the first night to your credit card. "inexpensive, but adequate"...leaves a few questions unanswered. Please ask for enlightenment. Inexpensive ,I guess, would be <140 Euros/night plus or minus breakfast. Adequate means a clean room, linens on the bed, fan or a/c or air chiller, indoor plumbing and somewhat centrally located. Pluses would be a private bath, view of a canal, English speakers. We don't need tv or wifi or big fluffy robes. What else? Thanks.
I stayed at Ca' Centopietre in 2008 and was very happy with it. At the time, it was under your budget. It is in Dorsoduro and very conveniently located ... about a 5 minute walk from the Accademia vaporetto stop, room was clean and nice, and owner was very helpful. I would definitely stay there again. Website is www.centopietre.net. You might want to check the recent reviews on tripadvisor for this place to see if it sounds like a place you would like.
Check out Dorsoduro 461. DH and I will be staying there in may for 95 euros per night (cash only). They only have 3 rooms, 2 of which have an en suite bathroom. The third room (which is the only one available for our stay) has a private bath, but it is across the hall. I was just messaging with someone who was there in January, and all of the rooms now have AC (I was concerned about 1 bad review on TripAdvisor from 2009). They truly enjoyed their stay, and you cannot beat that rate in Venice! Also, it appears that ownership has changed hands in the past year or so. The person I spoke with said the hosts were lovely, available, and knowledgeable. Sounds more than adequate to me. I'm not sure when you'll be traveling, but I'll gladly report my impressions after my stay there.
We stayed at the Hotel Messner's annex. The Hotel Messner is in the RS book. Very close to the Salute vaporetto stop. The annex is a separate 1-star building out the back of the hotel and down a side canal. It was very clean and quiet although the shower was the smallest I've ever been in. It was about the size of a telephone booth. You have breakfast in the main hotel. 115E.
