I am preparing for a trip to Italy with my wife, brother, and his wife. This will be the first trip for my brother and wife. I have always stayed in 3 star hotels in the historic sections of Rome, with good success, but I am wondering if there might be some other options for us since there will be two couples this time. Can anyone suggest something different, such as an apartment, or B&B. Thanks for the help. Jeff Masters
I am going this summer with a family of 5. Try VRBO or HomeAway - that is how I booked my whole trip. It is so worth it to have a common space to relax for a bit together, and the prices are usually much better.
The #1 ranked bed and breakfast in the Rome area is www.olivetreehill.com. It's located 20 miles south of Rome in the very interesting town of Zagarolo and it's priced right at 70 Euros.
Ivano, our host, transported us to and from the train station daily for day trips into the city. He's an absolutely fabulous tour guide and famous for his midnight to sunup tours of Rome's center city. Ivano drove us Easter Sunday to the top of a 2500' hill to the town of Castel San Pietro Romano. We walked down 1500' on 3000 year old footpaths to Palestrina--home of a somewhat restored ancient pagan temple and museum.
We found the Roman suburbs to have just about as many travel sights as the city. And it's much more relaxing.
I can recommend a lovely apartment in the Trastevere area. My husband and I and another couple stayed here two springs ago. It had two bedrooms and two bathrooms and was big and comfortable and reasonably priced. http://residencelascala.com. Close to Vatican and we walked from here to many areas. It had a big furnished kitchen but in all honesty, we did not cook any of our own meals. Lots of restaurants nearby.
