Accommodation types in Dolomites - pros & cons?

We are planning a few days in the Dolomites (probably Val Gardena) in early July. We are a couple traveling with our 12-year-old son and will be doing some hiking - I’m in training!

What are your views on the pros & cons of staying in a hotel vs B&B vs self-catering (AirBnB, for example)? Are there plenty of restaurants in the villages if we are self catering?

Any recommendations for specific places are highly appreciated too! TIA!

Lots of restaurants, good grocery shopping in Ortisei. For 4 or more nights, we always go self-catering because we like the space and the opportunity to collapse "at home" after a busy day hiking and make a simple supper. I sent you a PM at your request, but if you need a list of available lodging beyond the few I mentioned in my PM, try this site Valgardena.it or Val-Gardena.com. Concentrate on Ortisei, Santa Cristina, or Selva. Don't go as far as Laion.

I am also planning to stay in the Dolomites for 4-5 days with 6 people- all first-timers, and would greatly appreciate recommendations for lodging. Thank you!

Thank you all so much! Laurel, I’m still figuring out how to reply to your PM. ;)

Re accommodation for 6, personally I would go with an apartment. There seem to be quite a few such places around the 3 main villages in Val Gardena. I love HomeAway for this type of accommodation. One thing I noticed (from lots of searching) is that the places up on the hillside have the best views but of course that means they can be a long walk from restaurants/shops. Where you choose to stay depends on if you have a car and your preference for food/entertainment.
