Accommodation Suggestions - Assisi (Christmas)

Hi All,

I am hoping to be in Assisi for Christmas this year, and am wondering what accommodation suggestions you have based on prior experiences. I am looking for something *- *relatively ** affordable given that I hope to be there in December and over Christmas. What are your experiences with accommodation in Assisi. Where have you stayed, where would you avoid. I have been to Assisi before and stayed at a hotel near St. Clair's, but looking for other suggestions. I am open (would prefer, really) monastery stays, but wary of booking through the monastery stay website due to reviews of their bookings.

Thanks in advance for your helpful comments.

For 17 years I was with an international music festival in Assisi. Every year we stayed at Hotel Sole which is right at the Ancient Porta Romana (between Santa Chiara and Piazza Comune). Family run. Comfortable. Easy access to everything in Assisi. The perfect place to be in the evenings when most of the day tourists have gone. The view of the valley is beautiful too.

I also stayed at Hotel Sole when in Assisi in early January 2005. It was early, early January. I was in a souvenir shop up in the town and, out of nowhere, a marching band of Santas went by outside on the street.

I suggest using the monastery stay website for browsing. Then do your own online search for contact information for the place you want to stay and book directly with the actual monastery. I have done that several times. A good place to start for finding the monastery/convents in Assisi is on the hospitality page of the visit assisi website. You will most likely have to email with the property, not book online. Usually there is someone there who can respond in English.
