My friend and I are planning a trip to Italy from Oct. 1 to Nov. 1.
KLM has 4 flights from Rome to Amsterdam but the only flight out of Rome to Amsterdam is 6:15 AM, which will allow us to catch the Amsterdam/Vancouver direct flight back home. I was wondering about staying overnight in Amsterdam on Oct. 31 and then catching the flight home to Vancouver on Nov.1. Otherwise we may have to get up at 3:00 AM to arrive at the Rome airport - not very appealing. Can anyone suggest a hotel or B&B near the Amsterdam airport for around 100 - 120 Euros? Is that reasonable? Any suggestions for Venice accommodations. I'm waiting for a response from Casa Rezzonico but they aren't giving me their rates for October. Oct. 22 to 25 we are going to the Amalfi coast and plan to stay in Sorrento. Since this is the off season, can we make our reservations the week before while we are in Florence or is it better to make these reservations before we leave, say in September?
You can stay in AMS if you want, however the 6:15am flight FCO-AMS is a EU schengen flight, therefore you must have consigned your luggage at the check in desk 45 min prior to departure. If you are in line at the check in 1h and 15min prior to departure it will be more than sufficient time. To be at the airport rome airport by 5:00 am, you need to leave your hotel downtown Rome about 30-35 min prior (by taxi) (by 4:30 am).
The nicest place to say in the Amsterdam area for the money is Hotel Schiphol, approx. 2-3 miles SW of the airport on A4-E19. And they have huge rooms that sleep a bunch of people. See: http://www.hotelschiphol.nl/en/rooms-suites/ In fact, it's the best accommodation we've ever experienced in Europe, and is a bargain at twice the price.
Thanks David and Roberto - the hotel in Amsterdam will work for us. Neither of us could face getting up at 3:00 am. I think this is the most convenient way to do it. Roberto, I've seen you answer questions on Italy before, do you have any thoughts about my question on the Amalfi coast? Wait until we arrive in Florence or book a month before? All my major cities are booked (Florence, Rome, Cinque Terre and Tuscany). I'm guessing Almafi can be left for awhile as it is the off season when we go there and Rick's guidebook says the rates are soft then. We are so looking forward to the trip Thanks for your help. This is the best site for information I've come across, along with Rick's guidebooks. Carol
