Any recommendations for places to stay in Sorrento in May? We are planning on 4 nights there as a base for seeing the area.

Stayed there. Loved it. Great view and food.
Hotel Antiche Mura: no coastal view but great location close to Piazza Tasso, and easy walk (we thought) to the train station. Good breakfast, and pleasant garden/pool/terrace areas for kicking back at the end of a sightseeing day with a beverage from the bar. Easy walks to Villa Comunale, the basilica, shopping, etc. Browse the reviews on booking.com.

If sightseeing the region by ferry, the port (Marina Piccola ) is located at the base of the cliffs below the city. You can get there by city bus or there's a public elevator (small fee) at Villa Comunale: https://www.sorrentolift.it/en/
You can also walk it: down isn't tough but back up is a bit of a puff.

We stayed in the Bristol Hotel in Sorrento many years ago, but just looked it up & as I remember it.
Stunning views & rooftop pool.
A visit to Capri is really good & also a drive/bus down the Amalfi coast. Stunning towns hugging the cliffs, but like many beautiful places, very busy.
Agree with Kate above - Antiche Mura. I think it is a Rick Steves rec, and you can get a discount if you pay cash. Incredible, overwhelming breakfast (so. many. choices.) with a nice patio area as well. Views of the city and the gorge that runs through town. Easy walk to everything in Sorrento, including both marinas and the train/bus station.
Another vote for Hotel Bristol. We had a terrace with gorgeous views of the Bay of Naples and Mt. Vesuvius. We ate dinner there our first night - one of the best meals we had. The rooftop pool was a perfect place to recharge after a day of sightseeing.
I spent 4 nights in Sorrento a few months ago (late September) and stayed at the Ulisse Deluxe Hostel. I don't know why it's called a hostel. I never stayed in a hostel that had a bathtub and a front desk that's always staffed. Good, clean place. Spacious (private) room. Nice spread for breakfast. A little out of the way but fine if you don't mind the walk. I had no view which was a little disappointing but okay. I would stay there again (mainly for the tub and the excellent desk clerks).
It is already late for booking Sorrento in May. We spent five nights at the cliffside Ambasciatori, which Rick called "a worthwhile splurge." May have same owner as the Bristol?
We stayed at Marina Piccola 73, on the beach close to the ferry terminal, and LOVED it!! It's very unique and gorgeous setting. We'd stay there again in a heartbeat if in Sorrento.
I stayed in a family run hotel in Sorrento called Hotel Gardenia. It had a lovely view, breakfast and the family was terrific. I could walk everywhere and was there during the celebration of the Virgin Mary in August.
