Has anyone stayed at Villa Monica or have other suggestions of where to stay?
we stayed at il nido. 3/31/08- 4/308. very clean, nice quiet rooms, great resturaunt and the staff works hard to please thier guest. 100 euros per night for 2 people. they also have a free shuttle to get you back and forth to sorrento.
Il Nido does get rave reviews on Tripadvisor.
This summer, we're staying at La Tonnarella. It's a bit more expensive than Il Nido, but it has its own private beach (although, it's still a bit out of the town center) and an amazing suite for our family of 5.
We're staying there in mid-September at the advice of many on Trip Advisor. You can read reviews and see photos there. I will say that Pasquale has been extremely kind and responsive in our e-mail communications and the rate is very reasonable. I'll make sure to post reviews for future visitors when we get back.
Add me to the list of Il Nido's happy guests. I wouldn't think of staying anywhere else in Sorrento. www.ilnido.it
Our family of 4 spent four nights in Sorrento (July 2006) at Albergo Settimo Cielo (means 7th heaven and it is!) This place was in Rick's book. It is located on Via Capo, above Marina Grande. We had a room with a balcony (I think all rooms have views) overlooking the bay of Naples with Mt. Vesuvius in the background. It was fabulous to sit out there in the morning and evening sipping our wine and eating our parm. reg. cheese. Also, there is a rooftop pool overlooking the bay. We had a car but parked it here (free pkg. at hotel)and used public transportation. Easy daytrips to Pompeii, Capri and Positano.
We were in Sorrento when Italy won the World Cup in 2006 and was that exciting! Something we will never forget it!
Carol, my wife and I stayed at the Villa Monica and enjoyed it thoroughly. Realizing I may be giving out a wonderful secret I will say it is well worth staying there. The price is very reasonable, the view is right out of a movie with Vesuvius and the Bay of Naples spread out before you, and the noight view is stunning. Pasquale is a great guy, loves to practice his English, and is very accomodating. I must say we had a car and it was very helpful as we drove the Amalfi coast several times during our 4 day stay and we enjoyed the freedom it gave us. We did take the train to Pompeii, though.
We've stayed at La Tonnarella twice and are returning again in July. We love it. Balconies, incredible views, restaurant w/great food, private beach that is wonderful (swimming in the Mediterranean was very exciting), wonderful staff, lots of terraces and flowers everywhere, parking, free internet. They're in RS book also. We were also in Sorrento in '06 during the World Cup and it was so fun and so exciting! Throughout town, at every corner, they had big screen tv's set up and everyone sat around watching and cheering. Every day was like Super Bowl Sunday. A real thrill.
Thanks everyone for your helpful advice.
We stayed at Hotel La Tonnarella early this month, so I thought that I would report back. Everything that Susan said in a previous reply is absolutely true. We loved it! The location was perfect (a bit out of the hectic town of Sorrento, but an easy walk or bus ride), and we took advantage of the beach for a couple of hours each day we were there.
We had toyed with the idea of staying at Il Nido, but we changed our minds when we discovered the family suite and the private beach at La Tonnarella.
The day we did the Amalfi Drive, we drove right past Il Nido (Via Nastro Verde), and we were sooooo happy with our decision. While Il Nido does get rave reviews, we would not have been happy to be that far from Sorrento and dependent either on our car or Il Nido's shuttle service.
I would HIGHLY recommend La Tonnarella.
Carol,
We have been back from Italy a week. Spent 6 night in Sorrento. Stayed at Hotel Antica Mura. It is not on the coast, so no views of the bay, but it is only 1/2 block off the Piazza Tasso, the main square in the town. It was great. It has a fabulous pool surrounded by orange and lemon trees. Our room was great and breakfast was included in the price. We had fresh flowers, fruit and a bottle of champagne chilling in our room upon arrival. We loved our stay there and will stay there again. The staff were all very friendly and helpful. Check them out on tripadvisor as well. That is how I found them, and they are also recommended by Rick.
Hello
Does La Tonnarella have a pool as well? I would like to stay in the Amalfi area and like Sorrento, we would like a place like La Tonnarella that has a private beach but also a pool at the hotel.
La Tonnarella does not have a pool, but there was a hotel next door (or, maybe one or two hotels away) to La Tonnarella that did. However, I'm nearly certain that that hotel did not have the beach.
I could be wrong, but I suspect that it will be an either/or, not a both, situation.
But, we figured that you can swim in a pool, but not in the Mediterranean, anywhere.
We also loved Settimo Cielo with a balcony and beautiful views and lovely pool. It is a 2 minute walk before La Tonnarella and with a RS 5% discount or 10% cash dicount very well priced. We paid 151 euros for three with breakfast this June. It a 10-15 scenic walk into town but that's how you get those views to die for. Hotel Minerva is across the street and has a fabulous pool with full sun, nice public rooms and comparable rooms but it has fewer balconies and is more expensive. We enjoyed are stay there in 2004. See www.tripadvisor.com- great site!
Settimo Cielo! That's the one I was referring to. As we walked by it, on our way to "downtown" Sorrento, my 12-year old son said "there's a 3 star hotel with a 5 star pool".
Cute! The Minerva by comparison has a 6 star pool
Last September we stayed at Hotel Minerva, one of Rick's recommended picks for a splurge. It is accross the street from La Tonarella. We loved it. All rooms have a view of Marina Grande and the coast, some with large balconies. They have a Rick Steves discount if you mention it when you request reservation info. The pool is nice but not huge. Though it does not have its own beach, there are many in the area to choose from. English is well spoken and the staff is very friendly. They cater to British visitors who have returned year after year for decades (we met some of them). Hot/cold buffet breakfast is plentiful. The photos on their website are accurate. Hotels in this area are a 10 to 15 minute walk into town or a short bus ride. La Tonarella does look lovely, too. We had dinner there one night. The food was very good but pricy and service was not the best. Best meals we had were at the several waterside family run establishments at Marina Grande.
