Can anyone reccomend an affordable place to stay in Rome that is in a good safe location and handy to the train station and sights. Around 60 Euro per night? Thanks

Not sure what time of year you are coming to Rome but perhaps the area that may best fit your budget and train options is Roma Termini. You might look at this link for the best-rated accommodations near Roma Termini. At the bottom of the article is a link that also ranks the area by price. I'd read the comments before booking if you opt to select by price.

In addition to Ron's comments, you might look into convents. There are some in your price range, scattered throughout the city, they are very safe and most have a reasonable curfew of around midnight. Not many frills, but breakfast is usually included. I've stayed at Casa Santa Anna near the Colosseum, there are several on the Aventine Hill as well.

We're staying at OliveTreeHill.com, which is about 20 miles south. A 30 minute train will deliver you to the main Rome train station. They're the #1 rated bed and breakfast in the Rome vicinity year after year @ E70 per double room. They also have apartments. Some of my most memorable travel experiences have been in European bed and breakfasts. In Italy, many innkeepers double as fabulous cooks. AirBnB.com, Booking.com, Venere.com and even Craigslist.com are also good places to look for budget accommodations. You can double check their quality on TripAdvisor.com's customer comments.

The 60E is a huge limit on availability handy to train station and sights. Around Termini will be closer to 100E plus depending on time of year.

Matt,
We stayed at Downtown Accomodation. No frills but the price is right and we felt secure. You had to be buzzed in and there was always someone at the desk. It's a 5 minute walk to to Forum and about 45 minutes to the Vatican.(We like to walk obviously).

We stayed at Villa San Pio in Rome 11 years ago. This is located in a lovely leafy neighborhood. Quiet. It's gorgeous and a short hike to the metro. The breakfast was excellent. That being said I would check out the reviews of this hotel as it has been 11 years since we stayed there. I think I saw it averaged $117. a night per venere.com.

Matt - I don't know if a hostel is an option for you. We stayed at The Beehive 2 years ago. We stayed in an 8 bed dorm for 25 euro a night. Very clean, safe, and (if I remember correctly) only a few blocks from the train station.
