Yes, the Amalfi Coast is an expensive destination, and Positano is at the highest end of the scale. The region is also very, very busy during the warmer months. Some additional info would be helpful?

When is your trip?

Who is "we"? A couple? A family? Approx ages?

I'm going to assume that you're planning on spending more than just one night in the region? Where else will you be staying, and for how long?

What is "reasonable" for your budget?

Your mention of heading there for the day to explore: Positano is really not very big and offers little in the way of exploring/things to do. There's some higher-end shopping, a church, the beach, a small Roman villa archeological site (under the church) and that's about it. We were done in less than 1/2 day. In addition, the village is built on the steep coastal hillside so exploring can involve managing a lot of steps.
