Accessability of Pitigliano in the province of Tuscany

I'd love to spend a few days in Pitigliano di Toscana but am not sure how accessible it is. Is there a train service or would I need a car. If a car is required, where would I park it? The town seems challenging for auto traffic. I would probably prefer to do an airbnb in the old city center.

Thanks, Steve

You need a car in all likelihood. We were there one May and parking was not necessarily easy but I would not say difficult (certain times of year it might be more challenging). If you rent an apartment, the owner will likely recommend an area to park, as ours did.
It's like most Tuscan towns, you park outside the ZTL and walk in.
I think you can get there and away by bus, but that leaves you without a way to explore the area, which would be a shame. The approach with that panoramic view is lovely.
Our apartment, "Panoramic penthouse in the ancient village," was fantastic: https://www.airbnb.com/rooms/10797877?adults=1&search_mode=regular_search&check_in=2025-04-10&check_out=2025-04-17&source_impression_id=p3_1733168324_P3afTp0sunW745FN&previous_page_section_name=1000&federated_search_id=5e8b9881-6ab1-441b-8ddd-28d1c558bf3f
There was a little bit of noise from the bar downstairs but everything else far outweighed that minor issue.

Only the historical core of the town (the little skin tag west of Via Santa Chiara) is closed to non resident traffic. Before you enter you'd see the ZTL sign below:

I was there in 2022 and parked on the street not far from the above at a metered parking zone. Remember that if you see parking stalls blue stripes on the ground it means pay parking (in that case you usually pay at a machine then place the receipt on the dashboard). If you intend to get accommodations inside the historical core, you'll probably have to park outside and walk in.

There are buses that you can use to reach the town, but they are not frequent especially on weekends, therefore without a rental car you'd be severely limited on your ability to visit places nearby.

PS: Pitigliano is in the Province of "Grosseto". Tuscany is the Region (the Province of Grosseto is one of the 10 provinces in the Tuscany region)
