Leaving tomorrow for Italy and I'd like to book a Accademia tix. Anyone know the website? I seem to be getting rerouted to private companies. Also, is Volterra a good day trip from Florence? I like Etruscan Art and don't want to be feeling like I am in the middle of tourist area. Thanks!
Since you are basically already leaving, I would ask the hosts/concierge at your hotel in Florence to reserve the tickets for the Accademia. We reserved upon arrival, and I believe our hotel also went through a private company. Other than that, the worse that can happen is you stand in line to get in.
"is Volterra a good day trip from Florence?"
It depends: getting there is not as easy as some other alternatives for day trips. You can drive or get there by bus; but having a rental car in Florence is problematical, and not everyone feels comfortable using the bus system in Tuscany.
Technically, Volterra can be reached by train from Florence, but the nearest train station is in Saline di Volterra, which is a 30-minute bus ride away from Volterra. And don't try the bus on a Sunday or holiday, virtually no service then.
OK well that answers my question! Do you have any other suggestions for a day trip out of Florence? We don't have a car, would like to be in a not so touristy town, and if possible see some Etruscan art.
Day trip from Florence, by train, and Etruscan art. Hmmmm...Tarquinia comes to mind for things Etruscan, but is too far away for a comfortable day trip by train.
Perugia is closer but still 5 hours of train travel from Florence (roundtrip).
Chiusi was an Etruscan town and is closer than Perugia.
There are lots of day trips out of Florence, if you're flexible on the Etruscan art. How about Siena, an easy bus ride from Florence?
