I’ll be in Florence for 2 days in May for my honeymoon. One of those is a Monday so the museum is closed and Tuesday morning tickets are sold out on their website. If we arrive before the museum opens, would buying tickets there be reasonable or should we expect a long wait?

Yes, there will be a long wait. Can you maybe look for a tour that includes skip the line admission? We did this for the Uffizi and it was worth it. The Accademia is much smaller but getting in and out early is really great if you can manage it. We did get tickets ahead of time for the first admission time and it was really nice to avoid all the people in line. I'd say to get there at least 30 minutes (maybe more) before they open if you end up waiting in line for tickets. Another possibility is waiting for the end of the day, I think the place clears out a bit near closing time. Good luck! David is magnificent!
