Academia & Uffizi in Florence: Tour Recommended?

I'm visiting Florence for the first time and not a huge art/history buff but I am definitely still planning on seeing the Accademia and Uffizi Gallery. Are group tours highly recommended or can I get by with a self-guided tour? Also, how much time should I allot for each attraction? Thanks!

You don't need a tour. You can do it yourself with appropriate self help guides. However, there are things you cannot see by yourself. The Accademia won't take long if all you really want to see is David. It took me a little over an hour to see the Uffizi by just hitting the high spots. It is a huge place and I am sure I missed something but, like you, most art doesn't excite me.

I love art but can't spend a whole day in a museum. The Accademia has much more than the David by Michelangelo, but if you limit your stay to the ground floor an hour should be enough. The Uffizi actually is not that large for a world-class museum, I would say two hours should do it without lingering but taking your time.

As for guides, the RS audio tours or self-guided tours from the guidebook are fine for most purposes.

I think many people would enjoy art more if they would spend a little more time with it.
