Our hotel in Florence messed around and did not get us tickets to the Academia. The online agencies say the museum is sold out. Is this true can you still walk up and get tickets by waiting in line?

Yes, you can wait in line. I was in Florence in April this year and noticed that the line was very short after 5 pm. At that time the museum was open until 6:30 pm or so. Your hotel may have tried to get your reservation, but the phone line to accademia reservations tends to be very busy.
