I'll be visiting Bergamo (citta' Alta) soon. While there I'd like to visit Academia Carrarra.
Has anyone walked from Citta' Alta to the museum? According to google maps it is only a 20 min walk but it looks like a back road. Wondering if it's a safe walk to do alone.
Do you mean the museum (as opposed to some other sight with a similar name)? I'm not familiar with it, but I just checked Google Maps, and it seems to be right in town. I've linked to Google's Earth view so you can see a bird's-eye view of the area.
It is a good idea to ask the question you did, as I've often found myself walking along rather narrow roads with no shoulders. In that sense, it can be unsafe to trek to an out-of-town sight on foot. I wouldn't particularly worry about being alone, though.
Thank you for responding. I too looked at the map today and it looked like it passes through some residential areas AND some narrow back streets. Just wanted to know if anyone out there has tried walking it.
Maybe Laura (RS) will see this and respond as she has written in the past that she has been to the upper town
It is completely safe to walk alone and there is a small church en route with marvelous frescoes. Stop by the TI and they can map it out for you. The Carrera is a wonderful museum.
Hi Liz
Thanks so much for letting me know. I was a bit concerned about that route.
I'm looking forward to visiting the museum and the church that you mentioned
Although it was on my list, I did not make it to that museum. I'd probably use the bus #1 for most of the uphill return trip.
Thank you Laura. I will keep that in mind.
If I do decide to take the #1 bus back from the museum to Citta' Alta, can I buy the bus ticket on-board, or look for a tabacchi near the bus stop.
I think the funicular is fairly close (walking distance) to the Carrerra and you can buy a ticket there. It will take you right back to Citta Alta. I often will buy an extra bus ticket on arrival and keep it handy should there be a rainstorm or should I be tired of walking. That way I don't have to search for a Tabac.
