Abruzzo

Traveling to Scanno Italy from August 13th-17th 2024. We are planning a day trip within this time to go to Pescara. Returning to Scanno, then checking out of our Hotel. We are looking for advice on seeing other small towns as we make our way down the Adriatic Coast for 3 days, then beginning to cross over towards Salerno for a few days. At this point we want to head back to Rome before flying home. What are the most scenic stops along the Adiatic, in Central Abruzzo and on our way back up to Rome? We will be driving a rental car. Thank you.

Central Abruzzo: Santo Stefano di Sessanio, an ancient walled town being restored, still with residents. The lentils grown there are famous, and i bought 3 packets of them to bring home - delicious.

Was in Scanno, last Monday, 22nd. Small town on the side of a hill retaining its original patina. Lots of steps and steep alley ways. Remains genuine and has yet to succumb to the commercialisation and faux veneers of the tourist czars. Touring around these hills and valleys will improve the driving skills of all motorists.

Southern Abruzzi towns nearby. Sulmona, market days in Garibaldi Piazza, Wednesday, and Saturday. We purchased local meats and vegetables. A lot of stalls appearing with clothing and such products from outside of Abruzzo and outside of Italy. From my observation is being transformed to satisfy tourism. Real confetti, sugar coated almonds, originated here.

Caramanico Terme. Contributor Nelly lives here. Caught up with Nelly, her husband, a friend from Canada and two dogs, on 25th. Views from the town over a valley, that I cannot pen words to do it justice. Excellent choice as a place to retire. A little further up the road, Sant’Eufemia a Maiella, is a town with murals depicting rural scenes of the area.

San Valentino, near where my family and I stayed for a week at an old farmhouse, is a town with a wonderful local Gelateria and a magnificent view to enjoy while slowly licking or eating the gelato.

Anywhere really, the enjoyment is whatever you want it to be. Until the time tourism over runs.

Just drove down the Adriatic Coast from Venice to Scafa. Not a fan of the Adriatic Coast north of Vasto. The coastal towns were destroyed by the USAAF in WW2 and are mostly post-WW2 modernist concrete constructions. Pescara is one such town. Some may like this.

San Marino, a classic hilltop town and Mt Conero may be of interest. The women in my family like Fermo. Home to many workshops of the Haute Couture.

Thankfully, many towns away from the coast are still unmolested. Macerata, Ascoli Piceno, Teramo. On Friday, had an authentic lunch at a farm near Penne. Served by the family. Needed a compass, ordnance map and navigation by the stars to get there. Many times, the difficult places are the best. Had not been to Penne before, so ventured in. Once an important commercial and governance centre. In my imagination much like Siena in the late 1940’s. Construction work is evidence of changes underway.
