? about going from Rome to Assisi to Florence and back to Rome

I assume that this is something I can do via train. We are leaving on June 23 and arrive on Thursday morning. We would travel via train on Friday morning to Assisi then to Florence for Saturday and then back to Rome. Any tips to maximize time and keep cost down?

My daughter will be in these cities on these days with her choir tour and I am thinking about following along with my other daughter. Everyone I know who has been to either place says they are a not to be missed!

It's very easy to do by train and very cheap. The train from Rome to Assisi takes from 2-2.5 hours and will cost 9-21 euros depending on the train.

From Assisi to Florence will take about 2.5 hours and cost 11 euros.

From Florence back to Rome will take 1.5 hours and cost 44 euros for the high speed train. There is a slower train but it takes 4 hours.

I agree, if you have the chance to visit these places you should.

Thanks Donna, the prices you give seem a little lower than what Rick has on his map. Perhaps it is due to the euro fluctuation?

I saw another thread about a train strike though so now I am wondering if this will even be possible.

Strikes usually only last a couple of hours so, hopefully, you'll be fine.

Yes, there is a nationwide strike scheduled from 21:00 on 24 June to 21:00 on 25 June. If I'm reading the information correctly, this will affect regional trains but not long distance trains.

However, there are certain trains that are guaranteed to run during strikes during morning and evening commuter hours. If you're willing to get up early, you can take guaranteed trains from Rome to Assisi. Regionale train #2320 leaves Roma Tiburtina at 05:59 and arrives in Foligno at 07:38. Regionale train #21620 leaves Foligno at 08:15 and arrives in Assisi at 08:28. The combined 2nd class fare for those two trains is €9.40.

Everything should be back to normal on 26 June.

The 2nd class fare on Regionale trains from Assisi to Firenze is €11.00.

The 2nd class fare for Firenze-Roma is €16.10 on Regionale trains, €28.00 on IC trains, and €44.00 on high speed EuroStar Italia trains.

Tim and Donna thanks. Unfortunately that is the exact day I will be travelling - what are the odds?

Anyways, Tim is it best to wait and book the trains ticketw when we arrive in Rome?

The Trenitalia site does not accept US credit cards so you'll need to buy your tickets when you get to Rome. The station ticket machines have an English option and they do accept US credit cards. There is open seating on Regionale trains and no reservations are possible. Officially, Regionale trains cannot sell out. If all the seats are occupied, people are allowed to stand.

You'll have no problem buying tickets or finding seats for 26 June.
