We are considering a short few days in Assisi, arriving by train from Florence.
What area of the town is considered the "Centre"?
I've never been there, so would like to know what people consider a convenient area to stay in for walking around the town, seeing the churches, convenient for restaurants, etc.
Thank you!
It’s not too big. I would just concentrate on a place you wish to stay. I greatly recommend Istituto Beata Angelina, a nun run inn just across the street from the Basilica. Our room had a fantastic view. Monasterystays.com
Our My Way Italy tour stayed at the Hotel Umbra in Assisi which had the most wonderful courtyard for breakfast in the mornings. Our large comfortable room had a peek-a-boo view of the valley below Assisi. It was tucked into a small side alcove off the main street (Piazza del Comune) which made for a quiet, restful stay and yet an easy walk to restaurants.
What is your budget? We stayed at Hotel Giotto and loved it. It was many years ago and, as far as I can remember, there was no spa there at that time. Now it looks like it's a hotel and spa and looks wonderful. Of course, the rates are higher now commensurate with the new amenities. Looks like about $220/night for a double. Location was great on the pedestrian streets of old town and the views of the valley were wonderful.
Try the Hotel Sole. It is family run (for several generations). I've stayed there many, many times. Beautiful view from the terrace of the valley. Right in between Santa Chiara and Piazza Comune - right where you want to be for the best of Assisi at night.
Thank you all.
I have stayed at Hotel Pallotta many times. Stefano the owner is very helpful. Hotel Pallotta is a beautiful place to stay right down the street from San Rufino. The owners also run the restaurant near the town center at Piazza Commune. Very nice family, breakfast, tea time, central location and great prices.
Happy Travels!
