Rick Steves' books his 17 Day Best of Italy Tour at that hotel. . We will be staying there as part of the tour in September.
Jim,
Yes, I have experience with that hotel - it's really nice and they serve a great breakfast. It's located inside the walls of what used to be a Chateau or something, and has the large gates to accommodate wagons and horses. There are actually a couple of hotels in that complex. When you first go through the gates, turn to your right to reach Hotel Aberdeen.
We have stayed there four times over the years. We stayed there before they ever remodeled. They are lovely people who work there and very helpful in every way. The rooms are very simple and for the price in an expensive city like Rome it is a really good value. No elevator so make sure you can haul your bags up stairs. The breakfast is excellent and also make sure you ask for a room away from the Breakfast room because it can be very loud early in the morning. We have always booked directly on their web site. They can arrange a cab or car service and have never let us down. They are an easy walk to the Termini, bus stop or Metro. There are lots of restaurants and shopping including a grocery store with in close walking distance. Two great restaurants right down the street are Target and Feel Good.
Aberdeen and Sonya are our two hotels of choice when in Rome. The Aberdeen is on the street that has a security office of the Rome government literally next door with lots of armed guards. I think the street is pretty safe. Anything near Termini will be on the edge of the main tourist areas. Everything except the Vatican is within a 15 to 30 min walk and, of course, you are near the transit hub across from Termini. The Vatican is an hour walk. Sonya does have an elevator.
Thank you all. In our (my wife and her then 83 year-old mother) trip to Rome in 2007 we stayed in a very nice hotel using Hilton points and it was quite a ways from Termini. Since I'm going solo this time and am only responsible for myself I wanted to stay closer to the old center. This trip is three weeks into Rome and out of Paris to do all the things I didn't get to do when traveling with family. I don't mind small and simple as long as I have a comfortable bed, a clean shower and the opportunity to be out and about with the locals as Rick suggests. Sounds like this is a great little hotel for that.

Another "yes" vote for the Aberdeen. Have a cappuccino in the breakfast room! Enjoyed my stay there.
