We are planning trip to Italy next year. We will spend some of that time in Tuscany (base camp TBD)and will have a rental car for that phase. I am a photographer and have a fascination with holy places in ruins. I'm aware of San Galgano, but would like to know of other Christian-era ruins that I can get to.
Ted you know of San Galgano...did you check out the sword in the stone at the nearby church too?
Okay, here's a call to help to our Erudite Helpliners - has Ted stumped us on this one? He's asking about "Christian-era" abbeys, monasteries, and churches in ruins - but in Tuscany (not the UK!). The Italians didn't have Henry VIII to provide ruined abbeys. If anyone knows of ruined Christian abbeys in Tuscany....
Ted, Since Kent has made this a call for help here are some possibilities from a search not experience. http://castellitoscani.com/sbruzio.htm http://castellitoscani.com/giugnano.htm http://castellitoscani.com/piteglio_pieve.htm http://castellitoscani.com/rosia.htm http://castellitoscani.com/sillano_pieve.htm http://castellitoscani.com/fango.htm http://castellitoscani.com/smichele.htm
Over the years Henry of Wichita has come to the rescue on some challenging questions. Once again, thank you, Henry!
FWIW, the Rand McNally map that I have of Italy (from their International Series) has a little symbol that means "Ruin". It looks like a white knight chesspiece. They have a different symbol for Roman and Greek ruins, so I bet this is what you're looking for. There's one for Galgano, and several others throughout Tuscany, near the following towns: Larderello, Farnese, Canino, San Quirico d'Orcia, Stia, Pratovecchio, Modigliano, and more. Best of luck.
And our thanks also to Michael on this one.
Thank you all for your responses to my less than standard question. I searched through the board and did not find another request like this one. The expertise of the posters here never ceases to amaze me.
