A week in Tuscany

As part of our 2 wk trip to Italy, we'd like to spend about a week of that just exploring Tuscany. Would it be best to have a "home base" for the week and have a rental car to make day trips to the different locations each day, or would it be better to drive and spend the night in different towns as we go?

Your answer depends on whether you like to pack and unpack every day! We perfer the homebase method. If you pick a central location it is easy and fun to explore from there each day. We love getting to know the area around homebase - it makes you really feel a part of Italy.

What would you suggest for that home base? Is Siena a good location?

I recom staying in Siena for half wk then stay in Orvieto for rest. this worked very well for us. In addition we stayed in Assisi to do Umbria.
