A week in Sicily with one home base and tiny kids

Hi everyone!

We will be in Sicily for about a week straddling the end of March and beginning of April. Four adults will arrive in Palermo with two very young children aged 3 and 1. Because of the little ones, we need to pick a home base and stay put since moving around is just too stressful for them. We will rent cars but seriously do not wish to do a ton of driving -- naps, bed times, etc. -- so short day trips will be the thing for us. We plan to rent an apartment or house wherever we go. It is possible to fly into Catania but more expensive for us, so we'd like to explore possibilities on the western side of the island before switching to the east.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a town on the western side of the island fairly close to Palermo to make home base? We will obviously need a market and preferably a restaurant or two close by, but I know that has more to do with the place we choose than the city. We have no illusions of seeing anywhere close to all that beautiful Sicily has to offer but hope to experience a small microcosm of it's culture, history and natural beauty from a single locale.

I've been so amazed by the level of advice and engagement in this forum. I'm really looking forward to getting some feedback. :) Thank you so much for any help and advice!

I don't know if specific apartment accommodations, but I would try to stay in Monreale or Mondello. Palermo is near a wonderful nature reserve area, and you can easily daytrip to Trapani, Erice, Segesta; and further away, Agrigento.

Zoe's advice, as usual is spot on. You definitely want to limit your driving in Palermo as much as humanly possible.

Thank you both so much for taking time to reply! We may have decided to go to the other side of the island and make Siracusa our home base, just because there are some lovely options for staying at a reasonable price.

Honestly, the more I study this, the more I think there are very few bad choices on this beautiful island!

You are right, it's hard to go wrong.

You can fly into Catania and take the train to Siracusa; try to find a place on Ortigia, the small island that encompasses the Old Town. Market every day, easy walks around town and minubus connection to the bus/train station if you want to do daytrips.

That sounds great! Mom has asked for some grass for the kids to play in. So far haven't yielded any good possibilities actually in Ortigia but I'll keep looking.

You've been so helpful! I genuinely appreciate it!

On the west side consider also Scopello.

No grass in Ortigia.

With one week you should concentrate on either Western Sicily or the East side of the island. Too much to do both in a short time with small kids.

Thank you, Roberto! No, we will definitely stay in one place and soak up all we can in that spot. :)
