A week in Rome in August...

Let me say outright that if I was planning a trip on my own, I would never ever ever choose Italy in August. BUT, my best friend has been asked to speak at a conference in Rome the first week of August and I can tag along and have my lodging paid for, which is the reason I'm considering this!

I'm looking at $1,000/$1200 for the flight, and then whatever I spend on food, ground transportation, and entertainment. Do the pros of a cheap trip outweigh the cons of the weather?

I also feel like this gives me the opportunity to "do Rome" and then go back to Italy again in the future and not have to add Rome to the itinerary. Plus it's traveling with my BFF!

Would you do it? I'm a budget conscious traveler, so I tend to take my trips when I get a chance to save serious money, and not having to pay for the hotel makes this trip possible.

Finally, if you would go in August and had seven days in Rome - would you do a day trip? And if so, where? Florence? Naples?

(Also yes, breathable fabrics, I know. haha)

YES

If you feel the need to leave Rome proper, Ostia Antica might be a good choice to 'get out of the city', but not have a tiring day of long distance travel.

I'm seeing flights under $800 August Sundays to Wednesdays on Delta from Omaha thru Atlanta to Rome for 14 day stays. Coming back after 7 days is between $900 and $1000.

Rome is one of those cities where you can spend an entire week. If at all possible, take another week and take in Florence and Venice via train.

There are some great day trips to be made out of Rome to places like Orvieto (70 minutes by train) or Ostia Antica. The suburbs have many sights to see.

Yes absolutely

You could even go to the beach in Ostia after you visit Ostia Antica
I’d consider spending the night there in a cheap hotel

Florence will be hotter and more humid-save that for your next trip

Do you know where the hotel is that you will be staying in Rome ?

Can you add more time on your own dime?
Your biggest expense is going to be airfare-make the most of it by stretching your trip if you can

another vote for "GO". And I hate hot weather but the pro's outweigh the weather this time. I am sure there are places in/around Rome you can go that will be cooler than the city itself-by the river, Aquaduct park. Go to the city sights aearly morning or early evening. Spend the heat of the day in the cooler areas.

I won't be able to add more time, although it would be fun! She is a high school teacher and has to get back for in-service which will already be starting without her and my twins will be starting college a week and a half later so I will want to be home and get them squared away with dorm and college stuff.

BUT I'm glad to know most people would still recommend I take the chance and go for it. Thanks for all the day trip suggestions - the beach sounds like a good idea!
