A week in Florence/Tuscany question

My husband and I are planning our anniversary trip to Italy! We've never been to Florence or Tuscany and I'm wondering what would be a better plan of action: staying in Florence as a home base with time to sight see there and taking side trips to Siena, Montalcino, and Montepulciano; or staying in Siena as a base.
I would like to see as much of Tuscany as I can, within reason, but I also really want to explore Florence. Can we do both in one week? Where would it be better to stay?

Do you plan to use only public transit or are you open to renting a car? That will influence my response. My initial thought is to use two bases, but that might change if you'll have a car.

You can see some of Tuscany, as well as a good bit of Florence in a week. One question, though, is whether you really have a week, or does that include your travel days. Your 1st day is lost over the Atlantic, and most of your 2nd may be, as well. Your last day also will likely not give you much time except for getting to the airport.
I would start with 3 or 4 days in Florence. Then, rent a car and do some exploration of Tuscany in the remaining time. You do not want a car in that city, but you need one for getting around elsewhere. One very special experience you could have is to stay at an agriturismo and explore from there. There is much more to Tuscany than the towns you’ve mentioned. I suggest you buy a guide just for Tuscany, or get one from your public library, to see what appeals to you. You can check driving times on viamichelin.com or similar.
