A week in Florence?

We are debating staying for either 5 or 7 days in Florence.
Could people share their thoughts on this?
We are interested in art and architecture and gardens and quiet walks in natural settings.

What are some things that could fill a week?

Agreed! Also, if you stayed longer, you’d have more time for a day trip or two (Siena, Lucca, Pisa, Pistoia, Fiesole are some of the possibilities).

Our first Rick Steves tour was the Best of Florence (RIP) in 2009. We arrived a day early, the tour lasted 6 days (plus breakfast on day 7.) We stayed on in Florence another 6 full days on our own, and never ran out of things to do. The tour took a day trip to San Gimignano and a nearby winery; the entire rest of the time was spent in Florence. When we stayed on another week, we took one day trip to Fiesole; the rest of the time was spent in Florence.

There is so much to do, so many things to see... Museums galore, for one thing, and not just the Uffizi and Academia. There's a good archeological museum, a science museum, and the Duomo Museum, which has been completely renovated and expanded since our first visit, and is wonderful. The Bargello - I'm just letting names pop into my head here.

Walks in the Oltrarno take you past many small workshops that are delightful to visit. There are parks, cafés, and more museums.

And every church in Florence is a treasure trove of art and architecture.

San Marco, the museum, is one of my all time favorite places to visit, with amazing frescoes by Fra Angelico, where he painted them for the edification and as meditation aids for his fellow monks. Just superb.

Do get a good guidebook ahead of time, preferably at least two guidebooks. Your local public library will have some. The city is bursting with treasures, waiting for you to discover.

We're planning a week in Florence next year, and I'm so stoked!

We stayed for a week in Florence and easily could have stayed longer! We did do a day trip out to wineries and also did a day trip to Pisa. Florence is a wonderful city so if you can stay 7 days I would.

There are indeed so many wonderful things to see and do in Florence. It can be exhausting trying to fit even some of it into a 5 or 7 day visit. One thing that, IMHO, cannot be put off your list: just sitting on a piazza, any piazza. You can people watch, building watch, reflect on the impact of the Rinascimento on your own life, or just breathe. But do not bury your head in a guide book trying to figure out where to next! Unless, of course, it's to get a gelato and you don't need a book for that!

If you love art, then you've come to the right place in Florence. There is plenty to see and do. On our last trip (past fall) we spent five nights and 7 could easily be filled with day trips, and enjoying the Florentine dining experiences. We have been to Florence a half dozen times, and each time is a different experience.

I’ve been there 11 times, and each time I stay longer.
It’s a wonderful place.
I like to pretend I live there….

Since you will be there for a week, here are a couple of restaurants to consider.

Olio & Convivium Gastronomia Restaurant. It's on the Pitti Palace side of the river on Via di Santo Spirito. The web site is (or was) https://oliorestaurant.it/. A bit pricey at lunch and more so at dinner, but excellent food, good ambiance, and fine wine.

The other is Giglio Rosso located at 35 via Panzani. Their web site is (or was) https://www.ristorantegigliorosso.com/en/about/.
