A town in Friuli Venezia Giulia

Visiting the town of Cividale del Friuli was already one of several reasons why we are going to Friuli this fall. Here's what is right up my alley about it: medieval buildings, a devil's bridge, the unique-in-Europe Lombard chapel with frescoes and sculptures, an interesting town history, and an archeology museum. And good restaurants.

But now I am more than ever excited after seeing photos of the town in the blog Two Parts Italy that I've mentioned here before: Cividale del Friuli

It's an hour and a half's drive from Venice airport. For public transportation, nearby Udine (where we will be staying for a week) is an hour and fifty minutes by train from Venice. Looks like there are buses taking 45 minutes from Udine to Cividale del Friuli.

I will report back!

Oh wow, I've been wanting to get to this region for a while now. Renowned for both food and wine. I can't wait for your report. Great blog, too, now following.

Here's what the Cadogan guidebook (my favorite --- sorry, Rick!) has to say about FVG:

"For many British or American visitors, this elongated region east of Venice is terra incognita, a jumbly name that often turns up on the wine list in Italian restaurants. Trieste, at the far end of Italy, evokes cloudy images of pre- and post-War intrigue, a kind of Third Man on the Mediterranean. In between Trieste and Venice the imagination fails."

and then goes on to describe the area's history and what to see there.

The region of Friuli-Venezia Giulia has a sightseeing card that may be worthwhile for those spending some time in the area. The current prices are 30 euros for 48 hours and 45 euros for a week. Youths and seniors receive a 5-euro discount on each card.

I recommend some back-of-the-envelope calculations before purchase, because entry fees in this part of Italy are fairly modest to begin with.

There's a separate 48-hour card covering the sights in Aquileia and Grado. It costs 20 euros and covers one adult and one person under 18.
