A SHORTER STAY IN CINQUE TERRE

We have alloted 5 nights in the Cinque Terre this November. We feel this may be too many days for the CT at this time of the year. So therefore, we will only confirm 2 nights in the CT and we will have the option of staying the remaining days or traveling somewhere else before our scheduled arrival in Florence. Any suggestions for a 2-3 night stay between CT and Florence? Maybe the coast?

What about a hillside town in Tuscany? Since you will already have spent a few days at the Sea in CT you might like a bit of a countryside experience. There are lots of wonderful villages to chose from that would be close to Florence yet completely different. You could actually leave CT and pick up a car in Florence and explore on your own for a few days and stay in a village, then drop the car at the airport before heading into Florence. I think 5 days in Nov. might be a bit much unless you want to just relax, hike and maybe read.

Ditto what Terry Kathryn said. Hill towns offer a completely different experience. So many hill towns, so little time :) Tuscany is truly beautiful, but then again so is all of Italy :) You'll love the CT, and if the seas are calm and boats are running, be sure to take the ferry from one end of the CT to the other.....great views and photo opps.

Ernest, Five nights in the Cinque Terre is probably too long, especially in November. The weather could be an issue then, especially considering the events of Oct. 25, 2011. If you want a location where you can enjoy the ambience of a small Italian village, feel like a "temporary local" for a few days or perhaps take some day trips to nearby locations, then three days would be good. If you just want to have a look at the five villages and perhaps walk the Via dell'Amore, then two nights would be adequate. I agree with the others that a location in Tuscany would be a good place to spend a few days, and I'd suggest Siena. It's a wonderful smaller city and very walkable. You can easily take the Bus from there to Florence. It's about the same time as the train, and leaves from the centre of town rather than the bottom of the hill. I wouldn't bother renting a car, as I don't believe there's any need for it under the circumstances. Happy travels!
