I will be driving from Milan into the Trentino/Alto Adige region in October, and am looking for suggestions for routes that are more scenic than the autostrada. The route up the east side of Lago di Como, through Sondrino to Bormio looks lovely (but feasible only if the weather is good). A drive to Bergamo and then up the S42 looks like an option - but maybe not scenic enough to justify the extra time on the road? I'm also considering taking the autostrada to just past Brescia and then up the west side of Lago di Garda. This drive will be at the start of a completely open week in the region, so I can take as long as I want. I have no established destinations - I am going to go wherever the road takes me. I would appreciate comments on these routes and suggestions for others. Thanks.
Gavia and Stelvio passes may be already closed in October, so there could be no way to reach Trentino/Alto Adige from Bormio. Tonale pass (SS42) looks very long. The Lago di Garda shores are very scenic and a not overly long detour - I actually remember doing them several times when I was a child as we were living in Milan, having holidays in Trentino and the motorway between Verona and Trento being still under construction.
It also depends where you are actually going, Trentino/Alto adige is a large region; for example if you are heading over Merano, there could be exceptionally scenic itineraries through Switzerland. But generally speaking I usually advice to drive the motorway through Verona that is long enough and spend more time at your destination.
