If you call for a taxi, or have your restaurant call for a taxi, the meter starts running as soon as the taxi driver starts to come get you. That can make a difference if you're far from the city center. I had forgotten about this and was in Monteverde Vecchio last night. I asked the restaurant to call for a taxi for me. Five minutes later he showed up with 9 euros already on the meter. That's when I remembered about this. (I still would have taken the taxi, as Vodaphone decided to stop providing data right when I was trying to figure out a bus to get back to my room in Monti.)
