A real Xmas tale

In the last days here in Emilia-Romagna we are talking a lot about the history of an American Soldier fighting on the Appennines near Bologna during WWII: he was looking for three children known and photographed while he was here. Fortunately thanks to media he was able to find them and they met (only virtually...) yesterday.

Here some more details: https://www.wantedinmilan.com/news/retired-us-soldier-traces-italian-children-after-76-years-a-story-with-a-happy-ending.html

And here in Italian with more details: https://www.ilrestodelcarlino.it/bologna/cronaca/martin-adler-bambini-ritrovati-1.5815634

Very beautiful, Ricky. Thank you for sharing this. It also reminds us what the older generation experienced not all that long ago.

Here is a link from the Guardian telling the story — how he almost shot the children at the time, fearing the noise he heard was made by hidden German soldiers, and how one of the three siblings saw herself in the photo and reached out to get into contact.

Incredible that all three siblings and the now 96-year-old veteran are all still alive !!

I read that in The Guardian today and it was lovely. Especially as the GI had PTSD after the war-which was not treated unlike today. I hope it gave this man a bit of peace knowing they all survived and are happy.

That 96 year old soldier is my dad. It was a beautiful thing to watch him speak with the “children” again. I have even heard from their grandchildren.

Shellysjen,

Thank you so much for letting us know you are the soldier’s daughter! I’m sure you were all thrilled for him and my hopes are there will be a reunion picture of all of them. My youngest son is in his early 20’s, and it always hits me when I see pictures like your Dad, so young and handsome, and what these young men had to endure that go to war so early in their lives. I’m thankful he got to Rex h pit to the “children”.
