a place to stay or visit for a day outside of Florence

Mid October dilemma
6 of Leaving our Tuscan villa after a 4 day stay. 2 of our party will be heading back to Rome that evening by train. What can we do all day as we have our luggage in the van and we have been warned not to leave it.

  1. After spending 4 days in Tuscany (south of Florence - Siena, Montalicino).... we check out of our villa early morning and have a full day with a van full of luggage ... We want 1 full day to explore the highlights of Florence and then we will have 1 1/5 days to see another spot. Where would you recommend? (Parma, Bologna? a place in the mountains or stay in Tuscany north of Florence?) - we don't want to go to the coast as we will be heading to Positano. Can someone provide a beautiful spot you loved and why? (we also love cheese, vinegar, wine tours) Thanks!

If I was heading back toward Rome, I'd probably be staying in the Umbrian hilltown of Orvieto. It's a very popular hilltown with good accommodations and restaurants. And it's just a short 70 minute ride on a local train into Rome Termini.

Thank you for the suggestion - we are leaving out of Florence as we want one day there otherwise that would have made great sense! Do you have a suggestion beyond Siena as that is as north as we will get during our stay.

I am confused. You are staying south of Florence, asking about Parma/Modena/Bologna,north of Florence, then you are headed way south to Positano. That seems to make no sense. If you want a place on the drive to Positano then try Tivoli. If you want a place in Umbria try Montefalco.

So the way I understand it, you're taking one day as you leave your villa, to travel thru Tuscany. Then drop your car in Florence, and train down to the Amalfi Coast. Is this correct?

Where will you have been in Tuscany prior to leaving your villa?

Edit: if you have not driven in Italy, please read up on ZTL's

You Definatly DO NOT want to drive into Florence!
