A place to stay

My aunt and I are visiting Rome for a few days. She is handicap and will using a wheelchair most of the time. I was wondering where would be a good area to get a room that would be the most ideal for easily walking, or catching a tour bus to visit attractions. Any advice would be appreciated.

Also, we will be renting a car to travel other destinations, is it a good idea to pick up the car after our stay in Rome, or is it possible to drive to attractions and park. (I've heard parking is not good in Rome, but wasn't sure for handicap accessable)
