Hello all.. we will be traveling to Italy in early May and looking to opt for 2 nights in Rome instead of 3, with a nights stay somewhere between Rome & Florence.
We'd love a little out of the way place full of rustic Italian charm. Any suggestions?
Vignamaggio between Panzano and Greve if you are driving. Leave Rome early, spend part of day and lunch in Siena and then drive up the beautiful ss222 to Villa Vignamaggio. Get one of the rooms or the corner suite in the 600 year old house. Have dinner at Ristoro Lamole up the hill in the town of Lamole.
Beautiful place to watch the sunset. If going by train, I would suggest Orvieto or Siena as the place to stopover for the night and visit.
I agree with Skip!
Devil's advocate: Moving frequently from room to room while covering relatively short distances is tiring & a waste of precious ground time. Just a thought.
Thank you.. that sounds just like what Im looking for!
I'm going to agree with Bob about the time/trouble. You can get between Rome and Florence in about 1.5 hours by train, no need for a car and its expense. A nite along the way nice in a charming town sounds great, but it means you have to get a car in Rome and fight the traffic on the way out. Then drive to that rustic place. And the next day drop the car off in Florence, making sure to avoid the ZTL and the several hundred dollar fine for venturing into it.
lyla, If you're travelling by train, I'd also recommend Orvieto. It's a wonderful smaller Umbrian hill town with an interesting history. Travel time from Rome to Orvieto is about one hour, and from Orvieto to Florence about 2H:43M (depending on which train is chosen). Travel by train would absolutely be the most efficient method (especially with such a short time frame). Happy travels!
Hi Lyla. I would also suggest Orvieto and instead of spending the night there, you could easily visit it as a day trip from Rome or on your way to Florence but if you're trying to minimize moving around a lot, I would stay in Rome for 3 nights instead of 2 and visit Orvieto as a day trip. Orvieto is a neat little town. You don't say whether this will be your first trip to Rome or not but if so, 2 nights in Rome is really not enough in my opinion. There is so much to see and do there. If it were my first time in Rome, I would spend all 3 nights in Rome and really soak it in. We stayed 5 days there and I'm longing to go back because there are so many interesting things to do/see there. Just a thought. Have a great trip!
We are doing the same thing in December. We'll be staying in Perugia for a night. Enjoy!
