We are returning to Italy next month, flying into Rome and heading straight for Naples via train. Our plan is to spend one night there to see the archaeological museum, as we've already been to Pompeii. Then we'll head to Sorrento for three nights. I'm getting very nervous about Naples, though: the crime, the garbage. Has anyone been there recently? How bad is it? Would we be better off to skip it and take the train straight to Sorrento, even though that will make it a very long first day? After Sorrento, we're heading to Paestum, Matera, Vieste and then back up to Rome.
I was in Naples in June and it was fine - garbage was under control, unlike the previous summer when it was higher than my head due to strikes and shutouts by the Camorra. I love Naples, but if you only want to see the museum, take previously posted advice about luggage storage at the train station and grab a cab to the museum (closed on Mondays, as I recall). Leave time for the lines at luggage storage both coming and going.
if you arrive in Naples early and taxi to the museum do a half day tour you can get into Sorrento no problem, it's not a very long day. but naples has more than the museum and if you stay in a nice hotel you can see more. haven't been there for a while but it's definitely a great city to visit, if you can handle the differences. If you decide to skip naples for the night, just store you luggage at the train station and return there to catch train to Sorrento in the afternoon.
Hi Lynette, Rick mentions in his book some hotel recommendations for Naples. We stayed at the Pinto Storey Hotel and were pleased. It is located in Piazza Amadeus and in the Chaia neighborhood, which is nice. It is located on the 4th and 5th floors of the building, and the view was spectacular! I am referring to the view of the buildings on the hill, which rival Positano, Napoli-style. Breathtakingly beautiful. So, if you stay there, ask for a room with a balcony with a view of Piazza Amadeus. Happy travels!
