A morning in Milan-What to do?

Hi all,

We land in Milan from our flight from the US in the late afternoon. Plan is to get some dinner, try to stay up a bit, and then go to bed. We leave the next day for Monterosso on the 12:10 train from Milano Centrale (pre-paid). We were thinking of staying the night near Milano Centrale, but am open to elsewhere. Main criteria for us is not a big hassle of getting from airport to hotel night before, and we probably won't be super energetic that morning, but would like to see/do something in Milan before heading out to Monterosso. Suggestions for our morning in Milan?

We won't be back in Milan except to change trains to Varenna and then back through again to go to Lauterbrunnen.

Thanks!

Jed

The airport (Malpensa) is 12 miles out of town.
The next morning, with some jet lag, you'll want to get out and walk. Two possibilities are seeing the Milan Duomo/Cathedral and the historic (as well as current) shopping gallery that's across the street from the Cathedral.

You could spend the night at one of the hotels near Milano Centrale (Hotel Berna and Garda get good reviews here), take the metro to the Duomo stop and you will be in the middle of the piazza when you get off the metro. It looks beautiful at night. If it's too late for that, you can get a wonderful dinner at Settembrini 18 (restaurant name and its address). The next morning you can go to the Duomo, take the elevator to the roof for some personal time with the gargoyles, walk through the Galleria, or go to Castello Sforzesco - castle, gardens and museum but you may not have time for all of that.

We did the walk on the roof of the duomo (we opted for the elevator)...it's so gorgeous up there - you can see all the elaborate statues and gargoyles and stone work...

Jed,

I agree with the others in terms of visiting the Duomo.

After visiting the Duomo, you must try a panzerotto (a fluffly calzone-like pastry) from Luini's bakery just around the corner from the Duomo.
You may want to take some for the long trek to Monterosso!

Don't be discouraged if you see long lines at Luini's, as they move very fast.

Here is an article about Luini's famous panzerotti: http://www.italylogue.com/food-drink/luinis-famous-panzerotto-in-milan-a-quick-cheap-amazing-lunch.html

Have a wonderful trip!

Due to the Expo, the elevator is closed. But the steps are well worth the view from atop of the Duomo.

You can normally be on the Duomo roof terraces from 9:00 until 23:00 with last ticket sold at 22:00 (but may not want to go that late if the elevator is not operating). If you want to see Leonardo's fresco of the Last Supper, then that requires advance reservations, which you could make for the morning, online or by phone before you go. I also like to visit the luxury deli at Peck.
