A month+ in Rome

During April I will be checking off one of my bucket list items by living inside the Aurelian Walls for a month. Arrival is March 30 return May 5. We only have the rental flat in Trastevere until April 29. I have the option of renting another apt for the remaining days or maybe going somewhere else for the last 6 nights. Both arrival and departure are from FCO.

I was floating the Lake Como area around but my husband does not want to do so much back and forth traveling at the end of our trip. We've been to Sorrento, Positano, Capri twice during other trips and enjoyed it but if given the choice would probably only do Positano again. I would like to see a different area if I do indeed vacate Rome on April 29. We have visited hill towns in Tuscany and Umbria ( 21 towns in 21 days) when renting a villa in Torre Alfina and it was wonderful.

This trip will be more relaxing I hope. How about southern Italy? Any suggestions? Have been to Rome for a few days twice before and have some ideas about things to see and do but would really welcome any ideas. During April I really want to soak up the "Roman Experience." This site has been so helpful before so thanks in advance...

Consider the Castelli Romani outside of Roma (Tivoli, Frascati, Castel Gandolfo), or perhaps Bologna? Great possibilities for daytrips and not too long a train ride from Roma Termini. If not another big city (although Bologna seems small), then perhaps Ravenna or Ferrara, or closer to Bologna lie Modena and Parma.

Venice is another possibility, if you haven't yet visited there ...

I'd suggest Bologna with multiple options for day trips nearby, as well as being a destination (and culinary centre) in its own right.
Four days from April 30 to May 3 for excursions to Ravenna, Ferrara, Parma and Modena.

My wife and I spent 2 months in Rome in 2011. We took day trips to Castel Gandolfo, Tivoli, and Nettuno, and longer trips to Orvieto and Assisi. These were all wonderful.

Were you at all bothered by the "grittiness" of Rome? If not, you might consider Naples.

I appreciate all the suggestions...another question...would spending those last few days in Puglia be a stretch? I would be leaving from Rome but then would have to return for the departure flight. I do not want to spend much time in Naples ( maybe just a little too "gritty") but want to see the archeological museum. This could probably be a day trip by train from Rome any time in April.

Puglia is good. It's about 4 hours from Rome to Bari by train.
Just make sure you are in Rome the day before your flight home.
