Hi--
We are considering a teaching sabbatical with a couple of months traveling in Europe, but mainly Italy. We've been to Italy several times in March, and have been happy with the weather and delighted with the lack of crowds! However, we would start our visit in early February. Has anyone spent February in Italy? What was your experience? Thank you! Cheryl
Cheryl - Having been born in Roma I can tell you that life actually goes on 12 months a year in Italy - It is a vibrant country with lots of good things happening all the time!!
Ciao, Greg
As you look out your window today, you can bet the temperatures in the south of Italy are far better. From Napoli, Roma , and Palermo I see temps in the 50's. Our only early season experience was Cinque Terre in April and it was in the 70s every day!! Definitely go and experience it.
Haha, that's funny! We are having a (supposedly) big snowstorm in Connecticut today! Italy looks much warmer in comparison!
Thank you both for good advice! Cheryl
Weather in Italy in February: currently there's snow on the ground in Rome, go here for a photo of that

What a beautiful photo! Even snow in Rome is special!
Thank you for all the helpful comments! I see that if we do decide to be in Italy in February, we won't be packing as lightly as we have in the past. Cheryl
Hate to rain on your parade, but I have been here in Italy (Bassano Del Grappa) since Jan. 16th and think it is verrrrry cold. Many places are not open and those that are have been extremely uncomfortable (we could see our breath when in the palace and church in Venice). Another huge problem has been the inconsistancy with what constitutes a heated room. We have traveled to Milan, Cinque Terre and Florence and have encountered everything from great comfort to my daughter sleeping with hat and gloves on because it was so cold in the room. I'm not trying to discourage you, but want you to know the facts. Actually, I'm not sure but I think that this winter has been unseasonably cold :)
I've experienced two Italy Februaries now. Yes, this winter is colder than last winter, for sure. However, all of it is quite tolerable compared to the northeastern-US winters that I grew up with, so I personally don't mind it. It has snowed about 2-3 inches here this winter I think.
Most towns (at least up north, don't know about elsewhere) have their own Carnavale parades early in Feb, so that is quite festive. Venice is a lot of fun (but packed on some days) during Carnevale too, if you want to work that in to your itinerary. I've been down to Naples/Positano/Capri this time of year as well, and while it was still coat weather, it was nice, in the upper 40's/lower 50's F.
So anyway, that was my experience. If that's when your trip has to start, I would still go for it.
I have a photograph of myself take a few Febuarys ago sitting in a pavement cafe in Rome where I am wearing a fur coat and a sun hat. Glorious.
