A little help in deciding itinerary for Naples

Hello everyone! Me and my wife are going to Italy on a two week trip next week, and I need just a little help in deciding my itinerary for our stay in Naples. The plan we have decided on so far is this:

3rd Oct at 1pm: Land in Naples, drop luggage at the hotel, have quick lunch, go to Pompeii. In evening, walk around in Naples.

4th Oct: Rick Steves/Mondo tour to Amalfi Coast (already booked, so cannot change). In the evening, stroll around in Sorrento.

5th Oct: Archaeological Museum, walk around in Naples, and then leave for Rome at 6pm by train (ticket already purchased).

My question is this: Is it better/more practical to squeeze Pompeii and Archaeological Museum on the 5th Oct and still make it back on time to catch the train to Rome at 6pm? Or is this current itinerary more practical?

Thank you in advance for any help! :)

With your original plan, I think you'd get to Pompeii too late on the first day (and not have enough time there) if you account for all the time it takes to get into town, eat lunch, and then time to get to Pompeii. It's a really rushed way to start your trip. If it were me, I would try get to Pompeii first thing in the morning on the third day (I think they open by 9am) and leave yourself at least 3 hours on site (and add the transport time to that). After Pompeii, you'll have some time to walk around Naples before taking the train at 6pm. The upside is that you can always make that walking time longer or shorter depending on when you get back, so you have more flexibility.

Switch the Archeological Museum to the first day (and obviously check if it's open that day and the operating hours). I would not try to squeeze both Pompeii and the Archeological Museum into a single day.

Thank you for your reply! Yes I mean October, thanks for pointing that out. Editing the original post.

Going to the Archaeological Museum on the first day would have been my first choice too but its closed on Tuesdays. I guess what you say makes sense regarding the last day. Depending on when we come back from Pompeii we can decide if going to the Archaeological Museum makes sense.

Another option is to go straight to Pompeii and just put your stuff in baggage storage (you'd have to confirm availability either at Pompeii or Naples central train station) to save time instead of stopping at hotel and having lunch first. I think you can grab something to eat right outside the site (sorry I can't remember since it's been a long time since I was there).

I was at Pompeii last year. There were places to eat and luggage storage at the entrance.

Thank you for your replies! I didn't know Pompeii had luggage storage facility; that makes things simpler. It makes sense to spend the first day in Pompeii and not cram the final day with too many things to do. Thank you very much :)
