A Leisurely 10 Day Sardinia May Itinerary

Hello! We just booked our tickets to Rome and plan on spending 9 or 10 days in Sardinia. We’ll do Rome for 3 nights beforehand and end with a few nights in our favorite spot in Umbria.

We’ve never been to Sardinia, but I’m excited to spend some quality time relaxing and unplugging. What would be your top choices for bases? I’m thinking we will do two or three places at the most. We don’t like to try and cram too much into a trip, rather embrace getting to know a bit more about the authenticity of a place. Any recommendations are appreciated!

We’re in our 30s, love food and wine, meandering and the occasional light hike. I would also like to rent a boat/hire a skipper one or two days for swimming and exploring. We will rent a car.

Thank you for sharing! I'm hoping someone may have visited recently, but per your recs, it sounds like maybe it's not frequented as much in this forum. I'll take a look at these links!

I'm sure some have gone recently. But the places to visit are those. Towns don't move around and Italian towns don't change much. To make a change to anything inside old towns is a bureaucratic nightmare. They drive me crazy even to change a window.

The request to suggest places for people who love good food and wine recurs very often in this forum. I don't know many towns in Italy that wouldn't have good food and wine. That is something you can find pretty much everywhere you go. All those towns will be authentic as well. Fake towns are only in America, Las Vegas is one.

There's a writer who has done numerous articles on Sardinia over the years. We found the info to be useful:

A north base and a south base during a long stay might be useful as the roads are generally not autostrade. We spent about a week a few years ago and I remember we enjoyed Alghero as a small city, Bosa as an interesting town, and the Museum of Sardinian Popular Life and Traditions - Costume Museum in Nuoro was top notch (Museo della Vita e delle Tradizioni Popolari Sarde - Museo del Costume).

My wife and I spent about a week in Sardinia over this past New Year’s, split between Cagliari and Alghero, with a rental car. We enjoyed both bases, but wished we had given more time to Alghero. Cagliari has lots of interesting historical sights, and we spent a lot of time in the archeological museum there. Poeto beach, an easy bus ride from the old town, was beautiful and went on for miles, although it was pretty empty in early January. One must see day trip is the Nuraghe di Barumini, an hour or so north of Cagliari. Alghero is a much smaller city than the capital, with a more laid back vibe. We also enjoyed a walk around the pretty little riverside town of Bosa, although Alghero makes for a better base for a few nights. Being winter, we didn’t venture to the Costa Smeralda area, but what we saw of the island we loved. One thing we did note was that we had much more opportunity to practise our limited Italian than in other parts of Italy we have visited.
