Hi,
We are coming over in September for 9 days, 6 in Castellina in Chianti and the last 3 in Rome. Where to start, well we are staying here http://www.agriturismopoggetto.it/home_ing.htm has anyone been there, it appears nice and received good reviews online. We are spending 2 days in Florence and plan on the Uffizi, Accademia and the Boboli Gardens, would you recommend and other "must see" spots in Florence? I am a photographer and I was wondering about the foliage in September, will there still be flowers and such in bloom in Tuscany? We plan on going to the Wine Festival in Greve...thoughts? Lastly we are wondering if there is a scenic route to go back to Rome from Castellina since we will be in no rush? Thanks so much for the input it will be truly appreciated.
As a photographer you will be in heaven... there are little villages everywhere in the countryside. I assume you are driving...I love Florence, but also being a photographer prefer the smaller towns that are more picturesque. Some favorites...San Gimianno(sp) San Donato (tiny town with great view of vineyards) Certaldo Alto, Buonconvento, Vinci, Arezzo...too many to name. For a hint of what you will be seeing you can see some of my travel images at www.terrykathrynlawrence.com Have a wonderful trip..weather should be perfect, crowds not as bad with many tourists already back home.
WOW Terry your stuff is amazing
Joe, being in Florence and Tuscany you will have the best of both worlds for photography. I took some of the best pictures when we were out driving in Tuscany last September and I am not into photography! We were staying outside of Buonconvento and there is just gorgeous scenery everywhere! I can email you my trip report if you are looking for suggestions: ekc at brownrask dot com.
Since you are driving especially in Florence be aware of the the dreaded TLZ (Traffic Limited Zones) so that you do not get a $100 or $200 surprise a year later. Ask for a map of the zones and double check with your hotel to make sure that if the hotel is within one of those zones your vehicle has been properly registered with the police. Then cross your fingers hope that you did not accidental hit one of those zones.
Thank you so much for sharing. Thoroughly enjoyed the pictures.
Don't forget to use flickr.com as a resource. You can type in "Tuscany" and restrict the results to September to see photos taken last September.
Joe,
That part of Italy is excellent for Photographers, and you should have no trouble finding subject matter. When in Florence, you might consider taking the Bus up the hill to Fiesole, as there are some "classic Tuscan" locations up there, as well as some great views.
I just attended a Photography Workshop in the Val d'Orcia region of Tuscany, which is close to where you'll be staying. If you'll have a car and can explore the area a bit, you'll find LOTS of photo op's!
I'm still processing my images, so can't offer any samples. However, if you'd like to see some examples of fall colours in Tuscany, have a look at This website.
Happy travels!
Joe, There's a Chianti Festival in Greve in Chianti 2nd weekend of September. Great chianti and in 2000 or 2001 they gave free 3 hour tours of the area, not sure if they still do that.
