A few questions for Italy experts re: Collosseum, CT Terra cards, Airbnb - ID requests

Hi there! I have searched the forum for answers and am so happy to have such a great resource to check as we prep for a first trip to Italy in October. However, there are still some questions for those of you who have more current info or experience to share with us. We'll be going for a month. No tour, just on our own. No car rentals. Thanks in advance for any help/ suggestions/ advice you'd like to offer!
1) We'll end with 3 days in Rome - using RS's suggested itinerary for 3 days. Already booked tix for Vatican City/ Sistine for Day #2. Looking at the Collosseum website is dizzying with so many different choices - what are your thoughts about them? underground? attic? 24- hr? full experience?... ( the 2-day pass won't help us since I booked VC already ... oh well). Our plan is to see the Collosseum area - Forum, Capitoline, Pantheon on Day 1. VC and St. Peter's - Day 2, and then whatever for our last day.

2) In Cinque Terra - we'll stay 3 nights in Vernazza. We'll soak up CT - do the hikes - use the train? Same confusion with the Treno card/ Park Pass website - not sure which would be best - grateful for any help here!

3) For Airbnb asking for passport ID info - does anyone know the best, safest way to send the hosts this info? Feels scary to send off photos of our passports... someone mentioned using What'sapp?? I don't know and would appreciate any advice.
Thanks!

Feels scary to send off photos of our passports...

why?
did they ask for a photo of your passport or just your passport number/names?
That is all they need to register with authorities and I don't think a scammer can do much with that info

Thanks Christine - I'll add the DATE to my searches. Apologies from a teacher for the misspelling! :)
Yes, two of our hosts requested copies of our passports - one suggested Whatsapp. I'm guessing that we'll take photos and send them with fingers crossed. One host said that they were required for her to fill out " Declaration of Presence".

Just FYI
It is required
Hotels will ask for your passport on arrival
They have to register all guests with local authorities as well

Hi Sue and Scott -
While we haven't used airbnbs in Italy, every accommodation we've stayed at in the country has requested our passports at check-in for photocopying. They've either returned them while we wait or have us pick them up at the desk after we've gotten settled. It's a legal requirement, and your host is just asking for the info in advance to expedite the check-in process. It may also be necessary if they're not meeting you in person the day you arrive.

.. the 2-day pass won't help us since I booked VC already

I'm guessing you mean the Roma Pass, and it doesn't cover anything at the Vatican anyway.

Our plan is to see the Collosseum area - Forum, Capitoline, Pantheon
on Day 1.

Is this the day you're transferring from Sorrento? If so, that's a lot to try and squeeze in if you also have to check into your airbnb (Do you have a firm check-in time?) to drop your bags. By "Capitoline" do you mean the museum?

Looking at the Collosseum website is dizzying with so many different
choices - what are your thoughts about them?

Honestly, I'd book whatever is available to match budget and level of interest. Personally, I'm not a fan of the stress people have gone through to land tickets that include the underground; you can see down into large parts of it from above. But what I do recommend, if interested in the Forum and Palatine, is a tour which includes all three. The latter two sites are more complex and benefit from interpretation by an educated guide. Parco Archeologico del Colosseo doesn't offer one of these so you'd need to book with an outside company. Here are three oft-mentioned companies posters have used and largely positively reviewed.

We'll soak up CT - do the hikes - use the train?

There are MANY trails throughout the park so I'm unsure which of those you're looking at doing? They may also be closed should the weather be uncooperative: most are not safe when wet. Some are quite long and strenuous so you'd want to have a certain amount of conditioning to take them on. That said, I can guarantee you'll be using the trains as they're going to get you from point-to-point more quickly, when necessary, or at ALL should weather throw a wrench in the trail plans. It's just how MUCH you'll use them that's a crapshoot.

The Treno cards (and train tickets within the region) went to dynamic pricing this year, meaning they cost more for dates forecasted to be busier/busiest. Individual tickets run 5 euro or so on low-impact days to 10 euro on the busiest, and 8 euro in between. The treno cards are priced as displayed here....

https://www.parconazionale5terre.it/page.php?id=158

....and according to this calendar schedule:
https://www.parconazionale5terre.it/pdf/TabellaB-TariffaCinqueTerre.pdf

As your trip is in October, the price of a Treno card (or individual train tickets, if purchased at the stations) will involve only the green and yellow price levels. Treno cards only have to be validated the first time you use them, and they're not, say, 24-hour passes; a one-day pass expires at midnight of the day you validate it.

There are also ferries. I'll recommend taking a ride on at least one of them to get a gander of coastline from the water. They do not dock in Corniglia as it doesn't have a harbor. The ferry line you're most apt to use is "Line 02 Cinque Terre"; explore schedules and ticket prices here; you can buy day-of tickets when you get there.

Wow! Thanks for all your attention, Christine and Kathy. Grateful to have your help.

We're totally fine with hosts and hotels needing our passports for verification etc... Just wondering if people had better knowledge about sending copies through cyberspace safely in advance of our arrivals. Will just have to trust our luck.

Colosseum ticket question was aimed at your opinions on which features to consider as first timers... I'm confident I can navigate the ticket buying online ( our date is Nov. 4, so I'll prep for Oct. 5 - and having successfully bought our tickets for the Last Supper in Milan !!!! thanks to the forum help I got for that odyssey - I feel I'm ready :)
The note about the 2-day ticket was because I had booked our Day 2 for the Vatican area, making a 2-day ticket for the Colosseum sites starting on Day 1 - less than useful - but not a big deal.
And no, our travel from Sorrento day will be Day 0, so we'll shoot for an early start on our Colosseum day and plan to make the most of our Roman day!

Thanks Kathy, for your notes on CT, we'll do more research and probably buy the 2-day senior Treno Cards that include entrance to the National Park areas. Your note about seeing the coast from a boat is a great suggestion.

I know we'll enjoy and be dazzled by everything we do there - thanks again for helping us on our way!

Whatsapp is no "safer" than email

WhatsApp uses end to end encryption, so it is more secure than e-mail - an image of your passport sent via WhatsApp can be seen by only the sender and the recipient.

Ah, thanks for the clarity! I'd assumed the Roma Pass versus a 2-day Parco Colosseum ticket as that's usually the case when someone asks about a visitor's 'pass' in Rome.. I'd used another of your posts about trains/buses for the order of your trip so it looked like Sorrento> Rome was at the end. Good to know you have a little bit more time in Rome on Day 1! :O)

Colosseum ticket question was aimed at your opinions on which features

I'll go back to the recommendation for a tour which includes the Palatine and Forum. The forum, especially, was the heart of ancient Rome and it's difficult to get one's head around what's left of it without some guidance. The ruins on the Palatine are interesting as well. Tours which include all 3 sites normally last about 3-4 hours and are an efficient way to navigate the complex; they do not include the underground or attic of the Colosseum, or I'm not aware of any which do, anyway. Happy to be corrected if in error!

If you haven't found the trails section of the Parco 5 Terre website, here it is. it provides detailed info on each trail plus difficulty ratings, approx. time to hike them (varies by ability) and closures. Must have closed-toe shoes with good treads, and do read up on what's necessary for access the Via dell'Amore section of the Sentiero Azzurro?

Again, Grazie Mille, Kathy - you're like a personal travel guide, and we appreciate you sharing your knowledge with us!
Thanks for your thoughts about the Colossseum choices - a guided tour might be nice to join, however my first look at the options you listed found none available for the date we need (Nov. 4) - but there are others we can explore. No matter what, your thoughts are valuable to us.

We're aware that the weather may require flexibility with our activities - we've been so very lucky on other trips, so we'll hope for our luck to continue. Last year, we hit only fair weather - hot really - in Ireland! Our shoes are trail ready as long as the trails are open, and our knees have been conditioning every day. So we're as ready as we're going to be. Mostly, we adjust our expectations and seek to enjoy whatever happens!

I had found those CT park sites and info - and I'm sure it will all make sense when we get there. Glad we'll have fewer crowds for our travel time. This might not be the last of our questions - so stay tuned! :)

Thanks to the forum community for helping us plan our Italy trip and happy traveling to you all!

Ah. November 4th is National Unity and Armed Forces Day. The State museums are free on that day so that's why tours aren't available.

https://www.turismoroma.it/en/events/25-april-2-june-4-november-2024-free-admission-state-museums-and-cultural-sites#:~:text=and%20cultural%20sites-,25%20April%2C%202%20June%2C%204%20November%202024%20%2D%20Free%20admission,Unity%20and%20Armed%20Forces%20Day).

Unfortunately, "free" days would not be my choice to visit the Colosseum or any other major tourism attraction for that matter. Unless they still observe timed-entry reservations, such as Galleria Borghese does, they'll likely be swamped. I'd move your Colosseum/Forum/Palatine day to your Day 3 (Nov. 6th).

That the state museums be free on National Unity and Armed Forces Day just started last year. Nov. 4th has been more of a ceremonial holiday than a national one for awhile but apparently there's been a vote to change that. I wouldn't worry about lots of closures that will affect tourists though. Just shift some of your Day 1 plans to Day 3; you'll be fine.
