Will take the train from the cruise ship in Civitavecchia to Rome. My intention is to visit the Spanish Steps, Trevi and Bernini fountains then St Peters Square and the Sistine Chapel and finally the Coliseum before returning to the train station. Estimate we will have about 9 hours in Rome. Is this sufficient for a walking tour? Thank you.
Does the nine hours including getting to and from Rome? The time would be adequate since most would be a quick look. Depending on time of year, the lines for the Sistine Chapel would take some time.
Ciao!
If you're riding the train in from Civita, you'll probably get off the boat around 7:30 - 8:00 AM so the first train you can get is probably the 7:59 or 8:41 AM train.
Here are the current "regional" trains into Termini:
07:33 C.CCHIA 08:50 ROMA TERMINI #3259
07:59 C.CCHIA 09:20 ROMA TERMINI #12231
08:41 C.CCHIA 09:50 ROMA TERMINI #2335
08:59 C.CCHIA 10:28 ROMA TERMINI #12233
09:41 C.CCHIA 10:50 ROMA TERMINI #3263
There is also an IC Plus train at 09:17 but the BIRG ticket does not cover it:
09:17 C.CCHIA 10:14 ROMA TERMINI # 501 Carducci
********Then going back from Termini, these are your options to make the boat before it sails:
15:39 ROMA TE 16:57 C.CCHIA #12244
16:09 ROMA TE 17:13 C.CCHIA #2344
16:39 ROMA TE 17:57 C.CCHIA #12246
17:09 ROMA TE 18:15 C.CCHIA #3262
17:14 ROMA TE 18:27 C.CCHIA #3264
There is an IC Plus train that goes from Termini to Civitavecchia – again, not covered by the BIRG ticket
15:46 ROMA TE 16:35 C.CCHIA #538 Tirreno
******So,as you see - you WILL NOT have 9 hours on the ground in Rome. More like six. That said, you should probably cut back on your plans. To go inside the Vatican and the Colosseo would be a huge challenge in one day.... You can also arrive or depart at the San Pietro station to/from Civitavecchia and save yourself some time - maybe 20-30 minutes, but that stil that won't really give you enough time to go indepth on these sites. Your time is limited. I suggest the City red bus #110. It's an HOHO tour that covers over 80 sightseeing destinations. The loop takes 2.5 hours with an audio guide. It will give you a wonderful overview of the Rome's highlights. Sit on top in front for the best views.
You can walk to all these places in a few hours. Use a map. You might use the Metro from Termini (train station) to the Coliseum and start walking from there.
Hi, Margaret.
Change your order. Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain and Bernini fountains don't have lines that form at them.
What day of the week are you going? Can make a huge difference (HUGE one) for the Vatican. Generally either hit the Vatican first thing in the day, or last thing. Reply with your day/date of travel, and we can better advise!
Coleseum
The ticketing line (not the security line), can be skipped at the Coliseum by purchasing a Roma Pass, or a tour in advance. Roma Pass is 23UER - but considering your time restrictions, and it's ease of use, probably worth it. (It also includes free city bus transpo).
With 6hrs, I'd think of just using taxis. It won't coast you more than $5-10 between those destinations, and is much faster than bus.
I think we have to wait until Margaret responds. She could have nine hours in the city. Some cruise ships don't depart until 9 PM or so. She could be in port 12 to 14 hours.
Will be in Civit from 7am until 9 pm on Monday the 28th of September and thought I would buy a BIRG ticket for the train and Rome metro. I prefer to walk as much as possible and feel the local atmosphere. Just want to visit St Peters Square and see the Pieta then the Sistine Chapel so Vatican City is not a big deal for me. do appreciate all help.
