A decent Hotel in Milan

We are starting our trip in Milan on September 9 and will be there for 4 nights. We are looking for easy access to the sites downtown. It is not an easy place to get a hotel. I cannot find anything that is decent and/or a good value -- Decent is more important. Any ideas???

Kent & Lisa, we stayed at Hotel London (recommended by RS) and would recommend it. It's typical "historic center" hotel - small rooms, tiny elevator, small bathrooms BUT it is clean and accessible to the historic sites. Good luck.

Buon giorno Kent & Lisa! In June three of us also stayed at Hotel London Milano--the prices were good when divided by 3! The staff were wonderful and especially helpful when we couldn't find our third travel partner. The breakfast was ho-hum so I'd recommend breakfast elsewhere if possible.
The "Last Supper" is incredible but be sure to phone for reservations as soon as they are available, if I remember correctly that would be 2 months before the day you want to reserve. (I only had 2 choices of times and I phoned the first day we could reserve.) I just re-read your post and see that you're less than 2 months away already. Hope you have your reservations?

Hi Darcy. I see that we are neighbors! Are you the Darcy who works at the Bank of America? Our trip is only 3 weeks away, but the booking service for the last supper is "temporarliy susended"! Anyway, you are the second person to recommend Hotel London, but we are finding that the Steves'-recommended places are difficult to get into and overated -- So it's nice to hear that you actually stayed there and liked it. Ciao, Kent & Lisa

So far it's between Hotel London and Hotel Star (which is higher ranked), unless something else comes up :)

Last September, we stayed at the Enterprise Hotel and loved it! The breakfast was outstanding. However, I just looked at the rates, and it looks like they are much higher than we paid last year (although we were there in late September).

We just returned from a trip to Italy, where we stayed one night in Milan, really, in transit to London and, eventually, home in the states. We found a pretty affordable hotel right near the Milano Centrale train station called Hotel Berna. The location is not in the middle of much of anything, but it's a fairly safe street, with a couple other restaurants and hotels nearby, and it was an easy 5 minute walk from the stazione with our wheeled luggage. So, you would have easy subway access to just about anywhere in Milan for venturing out and about. The hotel itself was well appointed with friendly multi-lingual staff and an excellent included breakfast buffet-- the best we had in all of Italy. The desk clerk recommended a very nice restaurant that was about a 20 min. walk away that seemed very popular. After a very filling meal, we took a slightly longer walk back to the hotel and did a little window shopping through the (now closed) shopping district. The next morning was another easy 5' walk back to the stazione to pick up the airport shuttle to Linate airport. We paid around $130 through hotels.com.

A month ago we stayed at Hotel Berna for one night at the end of our trip. Hotel Berna is within easy walking distance of the train station and metro stop. We found it to be very nice and there is a huge breakfast buffet included. You can check out many reviews on www.tripadvisor.com

I've also stayed at Hotel London. The hotel is nothing special, but it is clean and in a really good location. It is between the Duomo and the Sforza Castle. It is also easy to reach from the airport. I took the express train to the Cadorna station and then walked to the hotel. It is probably about 6 blocks, but quite doable if you are travelling light.

Any particular reason you are spending 4 nights in Milan? I like Milan fine (have been there 3 times), but there are so many places a short train ride away that are really wonderful. Personally, I'd limit Milan to 2 nights, visit the Last Supper and Duomo, and then head somewhere else (Lake Como, Verona, etc.)

Kent & Lisa,

I'd also suggest Hotel London. I stayed there not too long ago and would certainly recommend it. The rooms weren't overly luxurious, but still very comfortable. However, I agree with the advice in the Italy guidebook about skipping the breakfast there and perhaps finding something on Via Dante.

As someone else mentioned, it's fairly close to Cadorna station so you could walk if you're travelling light (otherwise get a Taxi, it's only a short ride). I found it easy to walk to the Duomo, Galleria Vittorio Emmanuele and Sforza Castle. There are some nice restaurants in the area.

Happy travels!

Kent & Lisa, me again! Just laughed over the breakfast description. Our Italy adventure began, like you, in Milan. We were jet-lagged and in desperate need of caffeine. I had "americano" coffee, but my husband is a Diet Coke guy. Thankfully, there's a McDonalds near the Duomo. We stumbled in,got his Diet Coke, the sun came out, the birds sang, the fog lifted and off we went!! Be sure and stroll Via Dante for breakfast - you'll appreciate the beauty and antiquity of Milan's historic center. I would recommend to you PRINCI BAKERY on Via Speronari (near the Duomo). Not only was the food good, we had a wonderful experience mingling with the locals (many of whom had to help us place our order.) Check it out. Also, if you haven't had luck with the Last Supper tix yet, call the toll-free number. We were amazed by this familiar, yet extraordinary work of art.
