a group of us are travelling to Sicily for a week in May. The flight arrangements we have made allow us one day to spend in Milan. Our flight lands in Milan at 630am and we don't depart to Catania until 1030am the next day. We are arriving into and departing out of MXP (which I think we messed up and should've departed out of Linate to Catania, but we cant switch this now.) Do you guys have any recommendations on where to stay and what to do for the time we have available in Milan? I know MXP is a bit outside of city center. Any input is greatly appreciated. Thank you.

You might consider going to Stresa on Lago Maggiore instead. There is direct bus service from Malpensa terminals to Stresa, taking 1 hour.
For the return to MXP for your 10:30 flight, you would need the 6:30 am bus, ut you would probably have to leave Milan that early as well.

I believe the Sheraton Malpensa Hotel is at the airport and at the train station that takes you into Milan. So upon arrival you could drop your bags at the hotel - leave them there even if you room isn't ready - and take the train into Milan. Once in Milan I suggest at the very least getting tickets to visit the Duomo and its roof, https://www.duomomilano.it/en/. The other obvious activity is seeing the Last Supper. Other options include Sforza Castle, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Castello_Sforzesco, and the Vittorio Emanuele II Galleria, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Galleria_Vittorio_Emanuele_II. When you're done, take the train back to Malpensa, sleep and get up at a reasonable time to catch your flight.

If you decide to visit Milano, we have stayed at Hotel Berna and Hotel Windsor, both of which are fairly close to Milano Centrale.
