A big Grazie to Dario

Forum member Dario has been so helpful in advising people on the ways and means of Italian trains, and today his information has been particularly useful to us. So I want to give him a big “thank you”.

In particular, the advice that Frecce trains are not affected by strikes was helpful today. We arrived at Bolzano Stazione for our train to Venice to see notices about a public transport strike in Alto Adige today, 29 September, and everyone in our group was concerned. But I had booked a Frecciarossa train for our family of eight, so I assured them that we need not worry at all. Our train left on time and we are now on our way to Venezia Santa Lucia.

The other helpful bit of advice was on the tickets for Frecce trains. Dario said that, unlike Regionale trains, all one needs is the PNR code. I had already downloaded and circulated all the tickets (8 for each train, 7 trains in all) and was frustrated with managing them all. The conductor came by just now to check our tickets, and as soon as I showed him mine, he looked around at the family seated near me and said “6 of you?” I nodded and he did not need to see the others’ tickets. (Two family members are in another coach with a different ticket PNR so will have to show that separately).

Next time I will not bother with downloading all the Frecce tickets individually.

Agreed, Lola, that our Dario is a treasure!
Delighted to hear, given your earlier troubles, that something went entirely right for you and yours. Did the missing luggage ever turn up?

Well, they finally got their luggage on Day 7, not that it “showed up” but we tracked it to the AirTag location in Luzern! SwissPort made 2 unsuccessful journeys to the Berner Oberland with the 2 bags, but never made it to Mürren. They went to Grindelwald on Day 5, then turned around and went back to Zurich. On Day 6, the morning we left Mürren for Weggis (a date the baggage handler had been told) , my son and his wife started to go to Zurich to intercept it, but it left Zurich before they could get there, and that day they took it to Lauterbrunnen before returning it to Zurich.

My daughter-in law finally was able to get through to SwissPort by phone ( she had been trying to reach them by phone about 15 times each day. She gave them the address of our hotel in Weggis and they said they would deliver it that day, but no joy.

On Day 7 we decided to take the boat to Luzern so walk the Museum walls and shop for some clothes for them. While sitting at lunch she noticed the AirTag was in Luzern, just a few blocks away, so we quickly finished lunch and tracked down the courier’s van. And finally they got their luggage.

We have had all kinds of mishaps with the trains in Italy, mainly due to crowding but some due to mistakes I made.

But here is something that went right, and made up for all the woes and inconveniences: we had 5 glorious days of sunshine on Alpe di Siusi, a wonderful hotel there, and an easy time getting there and back thanks to a private taxi recommended by Laurel.

We are heading to Venice now just for one night, after which we say goodbye to our family (aka adventure companions) and start home. My husband has plane reservations to go see his brother on October 4 for an undetermined length of time.

Sounds like your time in Italy was amazing! The Alpe is glorious and I am so pleased you enjoyed Ivan’s services!

Dario is, indeed, a valuable contributor here. Having someone with “boots on the ground” is priceless!

And I'm pleased to hear that your husband managed to finish your holiday, before going to see his brother. That he didn't have to curtail.

Lola, I hope your husband gets there in time and can have some good time with his brother, and that you and the extended family can support him, and also relax.

Best wishes

Lola, you are also a big help to those on this forum! When I finally get to Switzerland and the Dolomites, I know you will be there for me!

Thanks everyone.

Laurel, a big Grazie to you for recommending Ivan Moroder and his taxi service. He is delightful to talk to and an excellent driver. It was so smooth and easy to have him take us directly from the Bolzano train station to our hotel near Compatsch. He is very proud to be recommended in your hiking book (he showed me his copy) and when I said I am acquainted with you he asked me to convey his greetings to you and Ric.

Nigel, I appreciate your good thoughts. My husband is in daily contact with his brother via FaceTime, and feels from his appearance and good attitude that he is stable, and not in immediate danger.

Thanks, Lola! I’ll have to send him the new edition since we missed going there this year.

His last comment was the day before you posted this post Lola. Maybe he was indeed embarrassed by the attention.
I sent him a PM in Italian, hopefully he's just taking a vacation break from the forum.
