dining in venice

I have done some research by reading and on Tripadvisor about where and where not to eat in Venice. My family of 4 adults are looking like everyone else
where the locals eat. I know to stay away from Menu Turistico. I am Italian myself so I am hoping to be lucky and stumble on some pretty good pizza and seafood After reading I am getting that Venice is expensive and its a hit or miss for the quality of good food. But I am sure there are many good restaurants that are not terribly expensive, you just have to know where to go. I have a few marked down but if anyone has some favourites please let me know. I will be staying at B&B3C in the castello region( been told 5 min walk to St Marks) the list I have are basically in the San Paolo, Carnaggio, Dosoduro region Thanks

We've found Venice to be a mixed bag for dining, but have settled on some favorites over three trips there. Nono Risorto (Rick Steves' pick) is fine for pizza or simple pasta meals. Nice garden if the weather is warm. We also like La Zucca, reservations required several days in advance, and Trattoria da Remigio. Generally one night we do a cichetti/pub crawl. If you go to the islands, do have lunch on Burano at Vecio Pipa.

Just want to caution you that many highly ranked "restaurants" on Tripadvisor are not even restaurants, some have no seating at all.

We stay in Venice three months a year these days and we eat real well. But as Roberto said above, we eat at home - love food shopping at the Rialto and some small shops. One of our favorite pizza restaurants, da Sandro in San Polo stopped serving pizza last year. Birraria on Campo San Polo also serves very good pizza and other italian food, highly recommended by our Venetian landlord.

Venice is an expensive place to dine.
When I'm in expensive cities, I have a tendency to picnic and find more frugal sources of nourishment. And I always eat heavy at the continental breakfasts.

Rather than recommend particular restaurants I would suggest you buy a wonderful guidebook published in Venice by Michela Scibilia called Venice Osterie which is very well researched by a woman living in Venice with well written descriptions of both the food and the vibe of each place. There are photographs which help convey the spirit of each restaurant and also she tells you roughly the cost of a meal in each. I don't know how easily you could obtain the book in Canada but it is readily available in Venice itself.

David, I'm so glad you mentioned that book. I hadn't got around to finding my copy so I'm glad you did. We've used the two most recent editions. It is available in Venice in both Italian and English versions. Most of our favourites have come out of that book. I really trust her. Thanks to all this helps. I do have the Birraria on Campo San Paolo on my list
and will look at the book by Michela
