Naples - Cruise Port

We will be docking in Naples on a Sunday in October of this year on our Grand Med Cruise. I would love to get suggestions on how to spend the day, as we have already been to Pompeii... My friend and I are both in our mid-sixties but still quite walking fit. We actually fancy staying in Naples and doing Rick Steves' self guided 'slice of Naples' walking tour, but some people think it is a waste of time...? Thank you ! Edit | Delete Edit User: Helena

Not sure how to response. I generally don't have a high opinion of other people's waste of time opinion. Some people like self guided walking tours and other do not. Doesn't anything right or wrong. The museum itself in Naples could suck up a half day with no effort. Have not done Steves' walking tour of Naples so I cannot judge that as to benefit. You are at the harbor so you could do a quick run to Capri and back.

I can't imagine why people think a walk around Naples is a waste of time. Not everyone likes Naples (to put it gently), but not liking a place is very different from finding it boring, and whatever else Naples is, it isn't boring. As you are aware, when you are docked in Naples, there are lots of options. But if seeing Naples is the one that calls to you, go for it. I personally loved the Museum of Archeology (far more than Pompeii), and the Cappella Sansevero is also amazing (it's most famous for the Veiled Christ, but Disillusion was even more impressive). I haven't looked at Rick's walk, so I don't remember if one or both of these are on it.

I would not opt for a walking tour of Naples, but that is just a personal opinion. If you haven't been to the Amalfie Coast that is an option to be considerd. We did an excursion through the cruise line and it was a wonderful day.

My personal picks would either be Capri or Sorrentoboth reachable by boat from near your Naples pier-the Capri scenery is stunning-and Sorrento is just a lovely scenic town-easy to walk about intersting shopping and eatingnice views Paul

Do the Rick tour, check out the archeology museum, go up to the Vomero district to the Certosa di San Martino and check out the view of the Bay of Naples from above, walk along the Chiaia & the Spaccanapoli and soak in the sights, check out the beautiful churches, stop for an espresso and sfogilatelle, check out the many fish/fruit markets....don't kill time "getting out of dodge" when there's a world of things to do right in Naples itself. I agree that a lively vibrant city like Naples is hardly a waste of time.

My sincere thanks to Frank, Harold,TC, Paul and Agnes for taking the trouble to respond...I have decided (for now) to take the advice of Roberto to 'experience' Naples as well as one could in one day... We have quite expensive excursions in the two previous ports Livorno and Rome, so we might as well do the 'free' walk in Naples. The walk takes us from the port to the museum and then along the Spaccanapoli past all the lovely and amazing churches, pizza places and gelateries to the central station and then back to the port. I will most certainly post my experience on this website as soon as we return... For now we just have to wait patiently for the time to pass until we can set sail... Thanx again.
