Hello everyone, I need to know how to get from Telese-Cerreto to Sorrento, I am very confused! I have looked at Trenitalia and cannot seem to make the right connection. I have read that we can go from Telese-Cerreto to Napoli, but I was hoping to avoid going through Napoli. Is there an alternate route (maybe going further south of Sorrento, then coming back up)? We were also hoping to go to the Vannulo mozzarella farm (I believe it is in Paestum). Would you know if it's possible to travel from Telese-Cerreto to Paestum, then up to Sorrento. I have become familiar with Trenitalia's website. But have gotten really stuck in this region with the CIRCUMVESUVIANA site and how to find the destination routes.
Can someone please guide me. Thank you and I look forward to your response, Dee.
Dee, I lived on the Beach for most of my life, Naples will be a breeze. I noticed that women don't wear gold jewelry in Naples, so a little prudence will get you lots of safety. Comparing murder stats is a little like apples and oranges, I doubt that anyone will try to kill you for a watch or a purse. So, take the train to Napoli Centrale, go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana (make sure you are heading for the right track before you take the stairs or escalator down), the Circumvesuviana leaves about every half hour. The last Circumvesuviana stop is Sorrento. A bus ride down the Amalfi Coast can take you to Salerno, where you can pick up the train to Paestum (there's a train stop there and not a full-service station, so have your return ticket before you go). Enjoy the Mozzarella farm (there are several), go to the archeological zone and the museum, and take some time at the beach (if you're going when the weather is good). A hotel recommendation is Poseidonia Mare (hotel, not the campground with a similar name) near the beach, the staff will meet you at the train stop.
From Telese you go to Naples using Trenitalia. Then from Napoli Centrale you go downstairs to the Circumvesuviana Trains terminal to take the train to Sorrento. If you want to go by train that's the way to go. There is no rail south of Sorrento. There is nothing wrong about changing trains in Naples. I know Naples has a bad reputation for its crime, however if it makes you feel better I just checked the crime statistics and noted that Miami has nearly 2 times the murder rate as Naples. So going to Naples will actually increase your chances of survival over staying at home. Paestum is south of Salerno. From Paestum you can take a train north to Torre Annunziata Centrale. From there I would take a bus down to Sorrento. You could also take the Circumvesuviana down from Torre Annunziata, but it's not the same station and you would need to transfer stations from Torre A. Centrale (Trenitalia) to the Circumvesuviana station at either Torre A. Oplonti or at the Station Pompei Scavi-Villa dei Misteri.
We were in Paestum last year. I understand your qualms about Naples, but honest that train station has been so changed through the years that I didn't think it was the same place. No hoard of gypsies. No aggressive private taxi drivers. No hotel touts. It was clean and easy to navigate. The luggage storage was great. Don't be afraid to change trains there. One bit of advice in Salerno: You may do better taking the bus to Paestum rather than the train because the bus lets you off right at one of the entrances to the archeological site. It's also pretty easy to drive to Paestum once you get out of Salerno, and there's a Hertz office within sight of the train station.
Vannulo is near Paestum, but not in Paestum (having just visited there last week). I would suggest taking the direct train from Naples to Salerno, then renting a car for the day to drive to Vannulo (and yes, it is worth it) and then on the Paestum, which is really beautiful. Then return the car in Salerno and train back to Naples/Sorrento.
