My family and I will be departing Rome (via Venice ) on a Thurs flight in Oct at 9:50 am from Fiumicino airport. The Venice night train (should) arrive on Thurs into Rome's Termini Station at 6:20 am. Is this feasible and will it allow enough time for transport to the airport and international check-in? Do the trains generally run on time or is this cutting it too close for comfort? Other suggestions? Thanks much!
and the operative words are "should arrive". I would never gamble on my international flight home. What happens if there is a train strike, or bad weather that slows or closes some rail lines or etc etc etc.
Too risky. Go to Rome the day before. Plus, night trains are miserable, and the trip is less than 4 hrs. I suggest you leave Venice the day before, and find lodging in Rome near Termini. Too bad you couldn't do open jaw out of Venice for the return flight.
I cannot think of anyone I dislike enough to suggest this plan to. In fact, to take things a bit further than already suggested, I usually try to stay at a hotel nearby the departing airport the night before an international departure.
I would also suggest taking the day or evening train from Venice to Rome (it is about 4 hours). If you stay at an airport area hotel, there is likely to be an airport shuttle.
I would also agree with staying in the Rome area the nite before. However stay in Rome, not by the airport (unless you're arriving on Rome too late at nite to go out for dinner). We stayed in one of the airport area hotels a few years back and they do have a shuttle. However there is absolutely nothing to do in the area; nowhere you can walk, and for dinner all you can do is the overpriced hotel. On a subsequent trip we got into Rome around 7pm, had a nice dinner in Rome and an enjoyable evening walking around, then took an early morning Leonardo Express train to the airport.
Another vote to stay in Rome the night before. You're cutting it too close with a night train, which have a higher tendency to be late. Don't take the risk of missing your flight.
I would agree with the group... come back to Rome the day before. Overnight trains are perhaps the most "inconsistent" in Italy. I once waited 2 hours at Roma Termini station for my wife and her school tennis team returning from an overnight train that began in Sicily. I'd also stay in-town so you can see sights like this. But if you're arriving late in the evening, and want to stay at the airport, you might consider some of these Airport accommodation options... but DO verify your accommodation's airport shuttle service before you book!
How transferrable are your plane tickets? Can you leave the next day and count on getting a seat? That's the risk you are taking. In the best of all worlds, you could make it but you are taking a serious risk at missing your plane.
